Hello OAC Members!
This is Angelica writing to you all. For those of you who were unable
to make it to last night's meeting, here is an overview of what we
discussed:
PAST EVENTS--- Clean Energy Summit, Senator Reid visit, and the Unity
Rally
UPCOMING EVENTS----- Involvement Fair, Sisters on the Planet
Screening, and the Hunger Banquet.
Please scroll down to read all the details!!
PAST EVENTS SINCE OUR LAST MEETING:
-OAC attends the National Clean Energy Summit-- Lauren and I had
the opportunity to attend the National
Clean Energy Summit organized by Senator Reid. The conference
was focused on discussing how we can
creating a low-carbon economy in the United States by
implementing solar, wind, and geothermal energy.
Some of the presenters included T. Boone Pickens, Hilda Solis,
Dina Titus, Bill Clinton, and Michael
Bloomberg. We were fortunate enough to get Oxfam packets into
the hands of Bill Clinton, Dina Titus, and
Hilda Solis.
-Tonopah and Angelica visit Senator Reid's office--- On Friday
August 22nd Tonopah and I visited Senator Reid's
office to discuss the work that Oxfam is doing in Las Vegas and
around the world. Kate and Katie, the two
staffers, were excited to meet with us to hear more about what
our grassroots constituency is doing. We
shared our concerns about the challenges poor people in the U.S.
and in developing countries face-- flooding,
droughts, cyclones, hurricanes, etc. We gave them our "asks"- 1)
Stop Hurting- by reducing our carbon
emissions 2) Start Helping- by helping the poor ADAPT to the
changes in climate. Overall the meeting went
well! The staffers were very kind and genuinely interested in
our concerns. I have been in contact with them
and they stated that Senator Reid takes this issue seriously and
is taking steps to reducing our emissions.
He is also concerned in helping the poor adapt to natural
disasters.
-Unity Rally at CSN--- Lauren and I attended the Unity Rally,
which was an event to bring the Democratic party
together to celebrate Barack Obama acceptance of the official
nomination for President of the United States.
We tabled the event and met people who were interested in our
important mission. Dina Titus attended as
well, who greeted us and said she remembered us from the Clean
Energy Summit. That was exciting!
UPCOMING EVENTS:

At the end of the meeting, Lauren handed out everyone's contact
information, a questionaire, and a bio sheet. The questionnaire is
just to get some feedback from you all on what you are interested in
doing as a volunteer or what you think we can do as a whole to improve
the OAC. The bio sheet is to get your personal information, so we can
form a volunteer book of the LVOAC. If you were not at the meeting,
we will get these sheets out to you. NEXT MEETING--- SEPTEMBER 24,

WOW----This is a lot of info., so if you made it to the bottom of this

for these upcoming events.
