FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENED ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Dear Michele,

Last week, thousands of you wrote or called your senators in support of the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act, making heartfelt statements about why climate change is of concern to you. WWF greatly appreciates your activism.

Unfortunately, the bill failed, 48-36, to garner the 60 votes needed to end a filibuster. As a result, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took the bill off the floor, ending further debate.

This was an expected but disappointing outcome -- reaching 60 votes is a very challenging task. However, we are heartened by the 48 “yes” votes that the bill received, along with six statements of support issued by senators who were not present for the vote. The fact that 54 senators supported moving forward on the bill, including the presidential candidates of both parties, marked a significant increase in political support for addressing climate change since the last time that the Senate debated this issue in 2005. This bodes well for serious action on climate change in the next Congress.

As I noted in a press statement:

The Senate’s consideration of the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act … marked a significant milestone in the effort to turn the tide on global climate change. Fifty-four senators, including Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), publicly expressed their support for advancing the strongest climate change bill to ever come before Congress. And in a clear sign of the changing political climate in Washington, ten senators who opposed the previous climate bill in 2005 voted in favor of advancing Lieberman-Warner -- a much stronger bill.

WWF activists deserve credit for helping to generate this strong level of support for the Climate Security Act. Thank you.

Many of you also responded to our appeal asking you to support a strengthening amendment that was to have been offered by Sens. Biden (D-Del.), Lugar (R-Ind.) and others affirming the Senate’s strong support for a renewed round of global negotiations to address climate change. The bill was pulled before any amendments were offered.

We will keep you posted on other opportunities to speak out for policies to address climate change. In the meantime, I encourage you to learn more about the threats posed by climate change and the many solutions that WWF is pursuing. Thank you for your commitment to conservation.

Sincerely,

Richard Moss
