Surgeryis often part of treatment for many cancer types. When the tumour is removed, the surgeon sends it for tests and to be examined under a microscope. This can give detailed information about how far the cancer has started to grow into nearby areas.

There are usually 3 or 4 number stages for each cancer type. Stage 1 describes an early cancer that has not spread anywhere else in the body. Stage 4 cancer describes a cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. This is also called advanced or metastatic cancer.

For some cancer types, the grade of the cells is not used to help plan your treatment. For others, knowing the cancer grade helps your team decide what treatments are likely to be most effective for you. Your cancer doctor or specialist nurse can tell you more about the grade of cancer you have.

I had an MRI and CT scan pre op and was given a predicted stage 1a grade 3 diagnosis. You will get a definitive stage and grade after the operation when the surgeon gets the full histology report. Post op I was advised that both my stage and grade remained the same as initially predicted.

I had my surgery at about midday and was back on the ward by 5pm. I stayed in overnight and was discharged early afternoon the following day. The surgery was fine. I had an epidural beforehand and something called TIVA, which meant all the anaesthetic I had was intravenous. This was to lessen my chances of feeling sick afterwards. I only experienced mild discomfort afterwards and was up and about as soon as my catheter was removed the next morning.

Some hospitals do and some don't. My hospital recommends them for initial pain relief after surgery. Mine was put in just before I was given the anaesthetic but within 2 minutes I was out for the count. When I woke up I could feel it wearing off and I could walk around the bed within a couple of hours.

Acute GVHD remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In a retrospective analysis, the response of 443 HSCT patients who received prednisone, 60 mg/m2, for 14 days followed by an 8-week taper, as initial therapy for acute GVHD from 1990 through 1999 at a single institution was examined. Median patient age was 29.0 years (range, 0.3-60.3 years), with 40% of patients or = 28 days) complete response observed in 35% and partial response observed in 20% of patients. Patients with acute lower gastrointestinal GVHD (+/- other organ involvement) had lower response rates. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, recipients of related donor grafts and recipients of GVHD prophylaxis other than methotrexate alone had the highest likelihood of overall response. Initial Minnesota GVHD grade or Consensus GVHD grade was not associated with significant differences in overall response, whereas patients with an initial IBMTR grade of B or C had a higher likelihood of response. Chronic GVHD developed in 42% of patients by 1 year after HSCT. The probability of survival at 1 year after initiation of steroid therapy was 53% (95% confidence interval, 48%-58%). In Cox regression analysis, factors associated with better survival included patients' youth, receipt of related or HLA-matched unrelated grafts, and administration of GVHD prophylaxis other than T-cell depletion in all 3 grading systems. Lower initial GVHD grade (I-II or A-B) led to better survival. These data suggest that steroids provide an active but inadequate therapy for acute GVHD, especially with higher grade GVHD. More effective prophylaxis and therapy for acute GVHD is needed for mismatched unrelated donor recipients and for those with severe GVHD.

Macmillan Learning provides a place where students can read, study, practice, and complete homework. If a course uses Macmillan Learning content, this LTI can help integrate the content, homework, and grades such that it is organized for students to access and for instructors to grade.

When you are choosing your subjects you should think about subjects that you enjoy and those which make a sensible combination for your chosen career or entry into higher education. Studying in Post 16 is demanding and so you will need to have been successful at GCSE level. There is an expectation that you will need to regularly work at home and so you will need to be committed to your courses and motivated to succeed.

Entry Requirements:To study BTEC courses you will need to have achieved 5 grade 4s or better at GCSE. To study A Levels you will need to have achieved 5 grade 5s or better at GCSE (as well as achieving at least grade 4 in GCSE English and mathematics). In some subjects there are more specific entry requirements. These are indicated under each subject in the A-Z of courses or in the course guide.

A-levelsSpeaking generally A level study is for students who have at least 5 grades above a 5 on the 1-9 scale, and at least a 4 in English and Maths.

These students can choose to study either A levels or Level 3 BTECS at Macmillan and it is possible to mix and match these qualifications.

Some, A level courses have specific entry requirements, for example to study Maths at A level you will need at least a 6. These are all explained in the Post 16 course guide and under A-Z courses on this website. A levels are assessed 100% by exam and all the exams come at the end of the course. That means the exam in Year 13 will cover everything you have studied in year 13 and year 12. A Levels are awarded grades from A* to E.
