I am currently living in the US but am trying to buy ebooks from amazon.jp. Is anyone aware of a straightforward method to get around restrictions buying from outside of Japan? Or maybe an in-country 3rd party service to broker the transaction?

Yes, in most cases you can download the library's ebooks to your computer. The details will vary a bit, depending on which ebook platform the book is on (Ebook Central, EBSCO), as well as the book's publisher. It is generally easier to read ebooks online in your browser (with the exception of OverDrive ebooks), since it will not require you to have any additional software, as outlined below.

Note: When downloaded in full, ebooks are typically accessible for 21 days, after which you must log into Ebook Central and re-download the title. Depending on publisher licenses, you may be able to download chapters into a PDF, but the page limit for downloading chapters varies by publisher and by book. These limits will be stated on the books main page in Ebook Central.

To download and read eBooks from Ebook Central you will have to create an account with ProQuest, if you do not already have one, and download Adobe Digital Editions This link opens in a new window to your desktop or mobile device.

You can buy ebooks from Amazon, Apple, Google, and other digital retailers, but why spend money when you can borrow them from your local library? If your library is signed up with Libby or Hoopla, you can browse, borrow, and read books directly through the app.

Your library should also provide login information so you can sign in to your online account and borrow ebooks. If you require a barcode to scan into an app, it should be printed on the library card you receive. If you're unsure how the enrollment process works, or are wondering what services you can use, contact your library or check its website.

The first time you launch the app on your mobile device, it asks if you have a library card. Answer Yes, then copy your card information from another device, search for your library, or have Libby guess your library based on your location. Select your library, then enter the details for your library account.

You can view all your borrowed books from the main screen of the Libby app. Tap the Books icon at the bottom to view your loans, holds, and tags, and access the book you're currently reading.

If at any point you want to send your borrowed book from Libby to the Kindle app, go to your Shelf and tap the Manage Loan link for the book you want to send over, then select the Read With option. Tap the Kindle Apps & Devices option and sign in with your Amazon account.

Hoopla lets you borrow, download, and read ebooks. However, Hoopla also offers access to movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, and comics. The app supports iOS, Android and Chrome OS, and Amazon tablets. Hoopla also works with Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, and Roku so you can stream video content to your television.

In order to check out ebooks, you must first sign up for an account at the Hoopla website. This account is separate from your library account. By default, Hoopla searches for the closest libraries based on your location. Select a library to continue.

Download the Hoopla app on your mobile device and sign in with your Hoopla account. At the main screen, tap the Books icon and then the Ebooks header to look for ebooks. Tap a book that interests you to see more details about it.

If the blog author holds the copyright on the ebook, they can distribute the ebook anyway they choose, either via download from Github or elsewhere, or sell it in an online store. They hold the copyright, they alone can decide how to distribute it. If they also sell the ebook in the Microsoft press Store, they may have an agreement with the store to also allow their own free downloads; it's hard to say without knowing the agreement.

If there are ebooks on Githb available for viewing or download, the owner of the Github page should hold copyright of the ebook, both 1) for their own protection against copyright infringement, and 2) to not break GitHub's TOS against copright infringement: -terms-of-service/#f-copyright-infringement-and-dmca-policy

I call them library apps, but these are not developed or maintained by the Library. Some of you may not be aware of this, but libraries operate online-resource collections quite differently from our print collection.

Public libraries do not usually purchase and own online resources like eBooks one by one as we do with printed books due to licensing restrictions and costs. Instead, libraries subscribe to online resource products from third party providers. All of these make up most of the items in our A-Z resources list.

Mostly, these apps do not work well with eReader platforms since they are usually made only for the iOS or Android. Moreover, they are only available via the Apple store or the Google Play Store. Only a few are available via the Amazon Appstore. If an eReader does not support installing apps from these app stores, it won't work.

If you're using an older Kobo eReader, like an earlier Kobo Aura, Touch 2.0, or Glo, the procedure is more complicated. You'll need to transfer library ebooks from a computer using Adobe Digital Editions.

With Boyue, the Android version for their devices is very old. The company has upgraded the Likebook Mars from Android 6 to 8 in October 2021. Considering the newest Android version is now Android 12, please avoid using Boyue devices with library eBooks.
