Right, ZFS doesn't require kernel patches so you'll be able to use a
stock kernel with Lustre+ZFS. Currently I do my Lustre development with
a stock 2.6.32 RHEL6 kernel.

That's a good question. Speaking for Livermore we'd love to see ldiskfs
get cleanly split from the Lustre source and promoted to a stand alone
first class package. Adding support for multiple OSDs has helped move
things is this direction, but a lot of work is still required to make
this possible for ldiskfs.
