My network printer stopped working about 3 weeks ago on my HP desktop computer. Everything still works on my Dell desktop and Dell laptop. All the printers were grayed out (adobe pdf, fax microsoft print to pdf, microsoft xps document writer, send to onenote, and snagit 10). I removed all the printers from the print devices and tried to add the 400 m401n printer. Windows 10 found it and added it but there was no driver available in status. I deleted the printer. I then downloaded the software and tried to install it. The software (wireless network connection) had a fatal error at about the 20% point in the installation. I connected the printer to the HP desktop with a USB cable and tried to reinstall the software, it failed at the 99% mark. I also tried to install the printer with the HP print and scan doctor, but had a fatal error during the software install part of the program. I added the printer from the devices window again, but it showed no driver. I tried to update the driver by changing the printer configuration, but it said the best driver was already installed. When I clicked driver details, it said that no drivers are required or have been loaded. I downloaded easystart and tried to install again, but it disappeared when at the download software screen. The device manager shows the printer under other devices and again under software devices (multiple times) There is a root print queue, but no 400 m401n print queue. Please help. Thanks.
Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately, the suggested fix did not work for me. I did, however, finally find a solution to the problem. I installed the May 2019 Windows Update to OS Build 18362.145 using the Microsoft Update Assistant and was able to add the LaserJet printer. I was also then able to add the Windows Print to PDF printer through Programs and Features - Turn Windows features on or off.
As suggested to another user having problems, connect the 401 to your network with a wired ethernet connector. Once you have in IP address for the wired connection, manually install the 401 as a local printer on a standard TCP/IP port. Use the HP Universal Print Driver PCL6 Ver 6.7. If you search for my post for a 4525 printer with an MSI laptop I provide detailed instructions on how to set it up. The automatic installs have been problematic on Windows 10 and manually installing the printer is the most reliable option.
< tried deleting all printers and then unplugging problematic printer, shutting down PC and then rebooting; then turning on printer and plugging in USB cable; it beeps like it is detecting it but it does not show up in the device manager and does not work; it also does not say a driver was successfully installed or the printer was installed successfully, etc.
< I have another PC with Windows 10 and the exact same printer and it is working OK; I therefore connected to this printer over my network to see if it would grab the drivers and perhaps make my printer on the new Windows 10 machine work; I did connect to that printer over the network but it did not solve my problem.
The security settings on the shared printer are working properly. Even though both attempts above at deploying with a GPO failed, the test user account can manually browse the network and connect to the printer instantly.
"I run this as a batch file in the all users\startup based on PC location, though it could easily be dropped into a logon script. Line #1 adds the printer in Windows, Line #2 sets it as the default Windows printer. You can add as many printers as you want using Line #1.
I ended up hosing all of the currently installed drivers and printers. Then I used the HP universal print driver which is a type 3 driver. This allowed the printers to be pushed with a GPO. The only issue is that by using type 3 drivers both x86 and x64 have to be installed. When using Type 4 drivers this is not necessary.
We just recently swtched to a new model of small laser printer for local printer use, and I am having problems with the first one we setup. The LaserJet M401n was initially setup by one of our field technicians. They connected the device via USB to the users HP Elitebook 2540p in docking station, and installed the printer using the included cd software and it worked fine.
The end user needed to relocate the printer farther away from the desk, so the USB and power were disconnected from the printer and it was moved and plugged back in. After this was done, the computer showed the printer was Offline. The user unchecked the Print Offline option, but whenever jobs were sent to the queue, they errored out immediately.
I worked with the user remotely and deleted the printer from Printers and Faxes, and the print driver from the Server Properties options in that window. I had the user re-connect the printer, but it was not recognizing that anything was connected.
I went into the Device Manager, but I didn't see any options for USB Printing Support or DOT4 Printing Support (which is usually providing the virtual USB port.) There were several devices named "USB Composite Device" and one device called "USB Mass Storage Device." There were not any data storage devices or memory cards connected to the laptop. After removing all of those from the device manager, I had he user unplug/replug the USB from the printer. At this point, the printer was recognized as connected and the Add Hardware wizad came up. At the same time an HP Installer utility started. I checked in My Computer and there was a removable storage device that was providing that installer. It appears that this printer may have a small memory chip containing the software and drivers needed.
A week or so later, the user contacted me and the office had some remodeling done, so the printer had to be dissconnected and reconnected with a much longer USB cable. The same problem resurfaced. The printer is connected, and even shows as Ready. Jobs fail when submitted, and reconnecting cables or restarting doesn't fix it.
At this point I wiped out all of the HP related printer software and drivers, removed anything that looke HP printer related from the device manager, unplugged the printer, and restarted the computer. I connected the printer after the restart and inserted the CD that came with the printer. I used the Device manager to install the printer driver and USB Printing Support from the files on the CD (I had to close out the HP Installer wizard about 10 times as it kept popping up.) At this point the printer was installed and operational, but when logged in with an admin account, the printer would still be prompting for the HP Installer software that appears to be running from a USB storaged device inside of the printer. That doesnt' matter much, but when I tested the same way of dissconnected and reconnecting the USB cable from the docking station, the printer stopped printing again.
I am going to try to upgrade the firmware on the printer, and the BIOS on the notebook. I have also asked for one of this model of printers be ordered for our test lab to see if we can replicate the problem on other machines
I am having a similar issue with my HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n. I am on XP in a corporate network environment. XP up-to-date. The printer is connected via USB. Reinstalled HP software twice (using the latest installer from HP website). HP DS Service will crashes each time I start it using the administrative control panel. The service won't even remain started after a hard reboot. This is just silly...
Yesterday I was gifted an old HP LaserJet 400 M401n printer. It does not have wi-fi capability so I plugged it into my router as a wired connection. My Windows 10 computer cannot see it. I printed the Configuration and Network Summary pages from the printer and it definitely has an IP Address and shows as ready, but I still cannot see it with my computer. The router does not show it as connected when I go to the router settings.
If you just plugged it in, that might not cut it. Did you look in the Printer's LCD and look at the network settings? There could be some mismatch of settings? Does the router show the LAN port has a cable in it?
As for Windows 10, how were you looking for it? You do need to install the correct HP Printer driver on the PC to see/use the printer. Not clear you did that? I know you can MANUALLY specify the IP Address of the printer during install, had you tried that?
Hello,
Just wanted to comment again now that I have a solution. The problem was that the Subnet Mask on the printer was not correctly configured. I had to manually enter it. Once that was done I reset the printer and it suddenly showed up in Windows 10 as an available printer. I printed a test page and everything works.
-If your printer is on the network you should be able to do an "add printer wizard" using the TCP/IP address of the M401n and for a driver from the Manufacturers Printers list select "Apple" and "Apple Laserwriter II driver.
-or try an HP/LaserJet 4MP or 5MP. I am not positive this will work- but I think your chances may be pretty good. The LaserJet 4MP/5MP had more than one tray so you should get at least 2 tray options.....
-No guarantee this will work. If you are USB connected- I cannot think of anything that will work since there are no compatible drivers out there that Windows 98 will be able to match to during the plug and play event.
-In Windows 98 Microsoft had very little network discovery capabilities- so you should be better over a network connection.......basically the OS will not know what printer is connected on the network.....
The good thing is that the M401 supports PCL6, PCL5, and Postscript. The drivers I recommended are PostScript drivers...if you wanted to try a PCL5 driver you could experiment with the HP 5P print driver.
