Sib. 7.5: Sibelius won't open "problem with file permissions"
Posted by ronaldroy - 21 Aug 11:26PM Hide picture
I have recently had to replace the hard drive on my Macbook Pro and Sibelius won't open, giving the error: There was a problem with file permissions. I am getting this error when trying to load Sibelius directly, not just opening a sib file.

The full story: Macbook died with suspected hard drive problem. Turns out it was a faulty SATA cable. In the mean time I have installed a 240GB SSD in the macbook and the original hard drive in an external case. The old HD (now external USB) seems to be OK and I access files from it. I performed a Migration from this external disk to the SSD and pulled across most of what I need ( I think). All other files and apps I have tried so far seem to work.

Any ideas? I haven't reinstalled from CD yet (my CD is Sib 7) - thought I'd try here first.

Running 10.8.5 on a 2.5Ghz Intel core i5 Macbook Pro

Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius and NoteFlight
Posted by WoodyS - 14 Apr 04:13PM Hide picture Couldn't help but notice in a recent Sibelius article at the Sibelius blog a mention of a tool called Noteflight - recently acquired by Hal Leonard. Just wondering what others think about the product and how it might interact with Sibelius.

My quick review is that it is not in the same league as Sibelius of Finale, but still may be useful for entering music sketches on the fly or when you are on the road. I see it has XML import and export capabilities.

Anyone have any additional thoughts, particularly on how the two products might complement one another?

Posted by ronald - 16 Apr 04:03AM Hide picture Hi,

To be a music notation software, Noteflight (NF) is not yet as complete as Sibelius; especially on the implementation of the articulations and symbols. So far, I have found that:

- Fermata doesn't work in NF.
- Accelerando-Ritardando also doesn't work.
- Decrescendo doesn't work with altered notes.

I also do an experiment with NF export-import feature. NF can interpret musicXML from Sibelius good enough. So far, I only found two problems:

- Imported chord symbols into NF is not fully correct/not similar, especially for complex chord names.
- Importing semiquaver triplets to NF doesn't work, I always lost a note or two.
- Also, NF doesn't have feature for exporting score to PDF, they rely on print as PDF method.

And my personal opinion is that:

- Noteflight is not yet as flexible as Sibelius in order to 'working faster'.
- Sibelius 7 sounds is still much better then NF crescendo sound.

I'm sure NF is developing, and fast. I'm using NF, just in case Scorch NPAPI terminated and update too late.

Posted by arfo - 16 Apr 11:27AM Hide picture I didn't experiment NF in depth nor I used the crescendo version but i tried the free version, as I teach in junior (K12) school.
I agree with ronald, in general: a good software but not as powerful as Sibelius is.
Very useful for my guitar pupils the tablature option (not present, on the contrary, on musescore).
Very useful too the possibility to embed songs in a wiki or a web site in general...

Posted by WoodyS - 16 Apr 03:49PM Hide picture It never occurred to me that Noteflight would become serious competition to a tool like Sibelius. Rather, my thought was, that given its portability (it can be accessed from anywhere on the web) it might make a good sub tool or something that creators can use on the fly and then export to a full functioned tool like Sibelius.

Just wondered what the thoughts were of others.

Thank you for your response.

As this may be some considerable time in coming, I am tempted to move to 'Noteflight'. One aspect that impresses me with Noteflight is the ability to synchronise with youtube videos, as shown in this link: =P7RQOuDskTk
Can Sibelius also synchronise to youtube videos in a similar way? Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius and NoteFlight

Although it's on our list to be able to sync playback with external sources, it won't be available soon.

Sib. 6.1: Playback out of tune
Posted by drockfresh - 06 Mar 08:48PM Hide picture Hello:

Instruments randomly start to play out of tune when working on a score. If I hit "all notes off" and then click back on the instrument, it will play back in tune temporarily but then it will drift. I can actually hear the instrument change tuning during playback.

I am using the built-in sound card on a new macbook pro with plenty of RAM. The playback device is sibelius plus the GPO Aria player. It usually happens after working on the score for some time. If I restart the computer and reload the score it does not solve the problem. An instrument will play back fine and then simply drift out of tune.

Where do you think the issue is?

Is the built-in soundcard on the Macbook Pro powerful enough for playback or do I need to use an external soundcard? I have a RME soundcard but I'd rather not lug it around while composing.

Should I not use the ARIA player and stick only to Sibelius built in sounds? Is my score to big to handle this?

How should I troubleshoot?

Thanks!

Posted by Daniel Spreadbury - 07 Mar 10:37AM Hide picture You don't need to worry about the quality of your soundcard, or anything like that. Do you use a lot of glissando lines in your music? Do you routinely start and stop playback in the middle of a glissando line? Have you imported your music from a MIDI file? Are there any hidden pitch bend messages lurking anywhere (switch on View > Hidden Objects to see if there are any grey text objects that look like B64,127 in your score)?

If this seems to affect a particular score at a particular point, you should consider attaching it here together with details of where the problem seems to happen and we can take a look at it.

Posted by drockfresh - 30 Mar 07:34PM Hide picture Turns out this problem was fixed by replacing my beat up and glitchy midi interface.

I was using a Novation Remote 25 keyboard as a midi to usb interface. It is designed primarily as a controller keyboard but the midi-in can be used and converted to the usb out. I was plugging my main keyboard controller into the Remote 25.

This particular Remote 25 has been primarily used as a live controller over the years and had taken many beatings . Turns out it has a loose modulation wheel that must have been sending phantom midi messages. When I replaced the R25 with my studio midi interface, an edirol UM 880, the problem was solved.

Just wanted to let everyone know how the problem was solved.

Posted by Edward Simon - 17 Sep 11:11PM Hide picture My is playing back correctly as well now. It only does it sometimes, I'm not sure what triggers it to play out of tune.
However, now I'm experiencing a different problem with the same file. There are some rectangular lines that appear at the top left corner of each system, it seems as though it might be a font problem. Anyone know what the problem might be there?

Posted by Hyphen - 04 May 11:41AM Hide picture In case someone notices that his entire playback is a semitone out of tune: in my case the problem always showed up when the sound module's native ASIO driver was used, and gone away when I chose ASIO4all (which I use when working remote). The solution: the ASIO driver was set to a sample rate of 44100 Hz while the sound card was set to 48 kHz. Adapting those solved the problem. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 6.1: Playback out of tune
Posted by Thomas Hohmann - 29 Jun 08:23PM Hide picture I experienced the violas playing in the wrong key while working with Sibelius 4.0 on an old PC running Windows XP. I was finally able to restore the score to proper playback by opening another recent score that also used violas, this played back fine, then I reopened the current score and the violas were correct again. In over 20 years of scoring with Sibelius, this was the first time that's ever happened. Back to top Allthreads
