Ehrenhaltsays Ziggy can help quell consumer worries over charger availability that some surveys show to be the leading barrier to EV adoption. The black-and-white robot is built around a beefy lithium-ion battery, with GPS, camera vision, sensors, speakers and microphone. From its home base, Ziggy slurps up a 50-kilowatt-hour charge from the grid, batteries, or solar power. Users summon the robot via a mobile app or in-vehicle infotainment system. Ziggy then motors over to hold a reserved parking space where owners plug in and charge at up to a 19.2-kWh pace, roughly the peak of current Level 2 onboard capabilities. (The company plans to develop DC fast-charging capability at roughly 50 kilowatts, well below the 150-to-350-kWh peaks of the most powerful ultrafast chargers, but still a useful jolt).
The system directly addresses struggles of would-be site operators, including the chicken-and-egg question of installing chargers for EV drivers that may or may not come. Siting, permitting and building fixed chargers can be prohibitively expensive for smaller business owners especially, or in older buildings or parking structures that lack easy grid access.
Whirring through parking lots like a less-cute BB-8 (sorry, Ziggy), the robot could perform another valuable service, as a rolling ambassador for EV Tech: How many hotel guests, diners, or mall shoppers would tell their friends about the amazing charge robot they just saw, or post Instagram shots of Ziggy cavorting with an exotic Porsche Taycan Turbo?
As the founder of EV Safe Charge, Caradoc Ehrenhalt is a big believer in electric vehicles.
So much so that he started the downtown-based company to provide electric charging stations, first in residential and then in commercial buildings.
And now he is pivoting again and getting into mobile charging stations with Ziggy, a battery on wheels.
After all, one of the barriers to mass electric vehicle adoption is charging anxiety, or the worry that a vehicle would run out of power before reaching a charging station.
The Ziggy functional demonstrator robot has been built and is entering the next phase as it nears the manufacturing stage, Ehrenhalt said.
The idea is to make them in the areas they will serve, he added. He expects unites to be delivered in late 2023 or early 2024.
EV Safe Charge still provides charging stations to residential and commercial customers.
Its business model with Ziggy, however, is to lease the robot to parking lots and garages, event venues, restaurants and hotels, who will then decide who will have access to use the units.
Ziggy takes the whole charging experience from being a capital expense to being an operating expense because the parking garage does not have to spend any money on charging infrastructure, Ehrenhalt continued.
EV Safe Charge has raised about $1.5 million in private financing since being founded by Ehrenhalt in 2016. Its financing has come from angel investors including Mountain View-based Sand Hills Angels.
Drue Freeman, a Sand Hills Angels board member, said the firm invested in EV Safe Charge because it believed that the acceleration of electric vehicle adoption will result in a growing shortage of fixed-charging capacity.
The cost of retrofitting existing parking structures for EVs can be cost-prohibitive for operators and landlords, and it would be inefficient to install a sufficient amount of fixed-charging capacity to meet demand in every parking lot, Freeman said.
Carl Norman, president of Capstone Financial Group, an international investment bank in the automotive and mobility space with West Coast offices in San Jose, said the firm was excited about Ziggy and believes the robot will be well received by the EV market because it represents a cost-effective alternative that simplifies the EV charging infrastructure.
Previously, EV Safe Charge has helped find its clients ideal charging solutions based on their needs, recommending charging technology from a multitude of partners including ABB, Enel X, evconnect, and Bosch.
Following an EV visit, ZiGGY will be able to return to its home base to recharge from the grid, battery storage, solar energy, or a combination of these sources. The ZiGGY robots can also be implemented for offsite charging if no infrastructure is available.
EV Safe Charge plans to lease ZiGGY robots to customers under a Charging-as-a-Service (CaaS) business model, which will include ongoing technical support and maintenance. Following production, ZiGGY will come equipped with two large screens that can serve as informational kiosks or interactive advertising, offering additional income options for parking facility operators.

Edgar the Hate Bug was a featherweight robot which competed in the 1996 US Robot Wars competition. It enjoyed very limited success, losing its only Face-Off match to Spike on an audience vote, and being eliminated from a Melee after getting pinned by Bite Me.[4]

Edgar the Hate Bug was a four-wheel drive robot inspired by Herbie, the semi-anthropomorphic Volkswagen Beetle appearing in multiple Disney films and TV series. Driven by four Black & Decker cordless screwdrivers - and utilizing eight NiCad batteries - it was armed with a front 15-inch chainsaw, mounted horizontally and powered by an internal combustion engine.[2]
Various materials were used to build Edgar the Hate Bug, including a secondhand PVC breadboard, aluminum foil and a wire frame/fiberglass shell modelled on the aforementioned Volkswagen Beetle. Metal plates were attached to the shell as added protection, with four providing wheel covers.[2] As a deliberate design choice, team webmaster J. "Sparky" Sparks had the robot painted black with a 'menacing tigershark smile' motif inspired by World War II fighter planes.[5] A sticker labelled 'UNCLE!' was placed on the robot's underside, intended to be visible when flipped over, but otherwise not seen in regular combat.[3]
Edgar the Hate Bug first competed in the 1996 Featherweight Face-Off championship, where it was drawn against Spike in the opening round. This battle was one of the 'Dual Matches' to take place in this weight category, occurring at the same time as the first-round fight between Rampage and Yo Mama!.[6][7]
Straight away, the drive system of Edgar the Hate Bug proved underpowered, leaving it unable to avoid an early ram from Spike. However, when Andrew Lindsey's machine was unable to push back, it responded by repeatedly attacking with the chainsaw. Damage to Spike's sponsorship decals was inflicted, before both competitors exchanged pushing and weapon attacks for 'a few minutes'.[6][7]
Eventually, Edgar the Hate Bug was attacked from behind by Spike, which proceeded to lift and push it chainsaw-first into the plywood wall. A 'cloud of sawdust' kicked up as the weapon dug into the wall section, as Spike kept pushing Edgar the Hate Bug to the side, along the wall and into the corner, while the latter began smoking. Both competitors took hits from a nearby flipper paddle, which whacked Edgar the Hate Bug enough times to break its chainsaw chain. The now-weaponless Edgar the Hate Bug was pushed around in circles by Spike, before the duo became separated by the flipper.[6][7]
