2015 Seminars and events (starting in late January 2015, dates, location, registration etc. to be announced)

 

Where’d my day go? Productivity, enabling (social-)technologies, on-the-job training

This seminar introduces postdocs to basic concepts of productivity and its typical pitfalls (“black holes”), including ways of identifying and improving on non-value adding tasks (“muda”), and options for using the time-saved so as to meaningfully further one’s career (on-the-job training). A range of electronic tools as well as social technologies, but also common individual and group pathologies will be presented, knowledge of which may assist in making the most of one’s day. Subsequently, on-the-job training options, available at LU and elsewhere, as well as one’s legal right to these are outlined, which postdocs may make use of in order to further develop their skill set in pursuing university or industry careers. Ample room for audience interaction is provided. The seminar is open to all LU pre and postdocs, widely conceived.

Watering Holes--Pitch and improve your project idea through feedback from colleagues you would not normally meet

This is a two hour regular event held at least three times per semester for 2 hours in cooperation with Lund University Innovation System (LUIS) at their location. The aim is to pitch a project idea to a diverse group of colleagues from departments other than your own who provide constructive feedback by mimicking the roles of the funder, the stake-holder and the user in order to improve the project idea. Especially recommended for those planning to apply for project grants, participants give a max three minute presentation according to the NABC formula (Needs addressed by the project idea; Approach pursued by the project champion; Benefits generated if the project is executed; Cost (per benefit) required to put the project on the ground). Projects can be at all stages of development (early to close to submitting for the funding round), and come from all areas of science and scholarship. Attendance is limited to 10 people max for each event on a competitive basis of which at least six should present a project idea.
