What is the nomenclature for a SPST (basically, on/off) pushbutton switch where you press it once to turn on and stay on, then press it again to turn off and stay off?

It's still SPST, but how the mechanical works is to toggle between on and off.

I'm pretty sure you can find the answers here:

They have 50,000 switches (likely an exaggeration), and have filters that will help you identify the specific nomenclature you're seeking. I believe most push button switches are SPST-NO... Normally Open switches that latch, either on or off. Otherwise, I believe the term is Momentary Switch, which is a press and hold switch, like the launch console switch. But whatever digikey calls it will get you what you want, and a part number.

I use just plan old micro on off bar switches. Face the on position down from the nose one. Gravity will keep it on. I have never had one fail. Even on the N-Rage

YMMV...I personally like screw switches.

Here's another tip: don't mix stranded and solid core wire together in a single terminal block, slot. As in a standed 9V battery cap wire and an e-match. Lost an expensive one that way.

I'm old, but I still remember...

oops  never mind,  the search results are all momentary,  not latching.  hmmm.

Search of some of the online electronics parts stores turned up nothing on screw switches. A google search pointed me to online rocketry retailers. Tuned into a youtube video about making your own, and he had me right up until he used a 3d printer to make the housing. So, I think I may order some from one of the rocket retailers.

Hi Greg,

SPST = Single Pole Single Terminal  switch

That means it is an on/off switch that connects one wire to another wire.

SPDT = Single Pole Double Terminal switch

That means it switches one input terminal between two possible output
terminals.

DPDT = Double Pole Double Terminal switch

That is, two input terminals to 4 output terminals.

etc

An SPST switch can be a toggle on switch, Push on push off switch or
push an hold on, release off switch. The 4 letters only tell you how
many input and output wires the switch has.

Bill

I think ppl misunderstood my original question. Let me try again. A push button switch which stays pushed after you remove your finger, and stays pushed until you push it again is called a ________ switch.

It's called a latching push button switch. Like Bill said the alphabet soup just describes the terminal configuration and the (typical) starting condition...Single pole, double pole, NO or NC. Some are center off and double pole.

Further details are usually in the descriptions or data sheet and may say "latching", "momentary", "magnetic"...the list goes on.

Look here:

There are multiple choices on that page. He's in San Jose.

I know what SPST switches are. I just needed the name of the switch which I described so I could search the online sellers. Just searching on pushbutton yields too many options.

Thank you.
