Hello!

I'm a high schooler trying to get their junior high power certification at the Snow Ranch launch on 4/4. I'm looking for a good kit (preferably a not too expensive one) that I could use to get it. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you!!

Honestly most of the LOC 4” cardboard kits are great.  I have family members who have used the LOC IV and the Goblin.  I’d say the Goblin’s a little safer just because it has thicker fins but it doesn’t really matter unless you have a really unfortunate landing.

I like Aerotech and this kit would be low and slow. It is 29mm and there are some 29mm H motors. BTW, when you said that you have one G rocket, does than mean you have only flown one G motor or you only have one rocket in the G class?

All these recommendations are good but I would like to throw the Madcow Rocketry kits into the mix.  They have one specifically set up for L1 Certifications:  https://madcowrocketry.com/3-l1/. My son certified with their 4” Little John, which is one of my favorite rockets (Madcow wasn’t around when I certified…)

Right you are. You are not Arjun Aggarwal. He has been asking the same questions.

So what is your flying history?

This is my second year flying for TARC, so I'm experienced with mid-power model rocketry, just not high power yet!

My problem with that specific kit is it’s 3”, going to go higher, and 3” is a little harder to work on.  It also has somewhat thin fins but at least they’re up high (i.e. less likely to hit that one rock).  I assume the goal was to keep costs down.

The Madcow 4” DX3 is an excellent L1 kit.  But I think by the time you configure it, it’s going to cost more than the equivalent LOC options.

How much would the estimated cost difference be between the two?

Apples to Apples, the LOC Goblin is $5.00 more expensive than the Madcow Goblin.  The Madcow also comes with rail buttons and a chute protector saving you approximately another $10.00.

If you check with Fred or Danielle at Rocket Supplies, you might be able to buy or take delivery at a launch to save on shipping costs.

Thank Bill!

Or local pick-up.

Also try the L1 kit, it comes with everything you need for L1.

She is captain of the Milpitas ARC team. She has the chops to pull this off.

I launched on the Blaze from LOC Precision, they’ve got a couple of solid ones. Make sure the motor mount is 38mm, not 29mm, cause it’s easier to put a smaller motor in the larger rocket than the other way around. I’d also recommend a bigger rocket if possible so it doesn’t go too high and you loose it. H-100 is a pretty common motor for cert, so I’d look at a couple of sims with the rocket with the motor you’d want to buy. Btw, the sim files from many of the stores DO NOT work in open rocket, and have to be opened in rocksim to get good data.
