Oh, my! I can’t believe I missed Dave’s memorial yesterday! When I read Paul’s Facebook note yesterday that “Tomorrow will be a sad day for LUNAR” yesterday I didn’t bother to check the date. So here I am, contritely typing away, dressed in my LUNAR polo with a small collection of Dave-memories to share. Unfortunately, it will be here, and not among friends yesterday.

Attached are the items that I want to share. The first, the file “Black Rock”, was a photo I found when I first heard. It poignantly shows both Dave, and our other well-remembered and still-lamented high-power guru, James Marino, chillin’ on the desert after a day of flying.

The two “Trip_Lunch” files are from when then-NAR-president Trip Barber visited us and then-LUNAR-president Raimondi presented him with a LUNAR polo shirt customized with his name and NAR number. In “Trip_lunch-1” it’s in the box he’s about to hand Trip, while “Trip_lunch-2” shows Trip actually wearing it.

Finally, the file “Level-4” is a little piece I wrote around Dave for one of our “April Fools” issues of the LUNAR Clips. There are some embedded nerd jokes in there. LMK if you can’t find them.

We missed you, Jack. But Tony was there, as were a large contingent of LUNAR and others. It was a great celebration, but emotionally hard to bare.

Dave touched SOOO many lives. I wonder if someone can get NAR HQ to attempt to tally just how many HP Certs Dave signed over the years. That would be a fitting plaque to display at LUNAR's launches, I think.

There was some talk about that at the memorilal.  Apparently NAR doesn’t track the certifier and they don’t have all the old paperwork.  It’s certainly quite a few.  He certified me for L1!

Well that's a real bummer. But honestly, it's not surprising. Still, I'm sure it's at least a thousand certs. 🤗👍🚀🚀🚀🚀⬆️

This is why I keep all the old flight cards.  I have them all back to 1993, except for a few batches that I lent to Fred for marketing research (and hope to get back eventually). While I’m not up to the task, someone with more time than I could comb through them. My launch-stats sheet would tell you which launches had cert flights at them, so you wouldn’t have go through them all.

Sounds like a good student research project for a history major.

Or a NAR sponsored project. 😏 I wonder if Jack could get them (the NAR) to consider sponsoring (or rewarding) clubs around the country, that kept their records, to do the research and give it back to the NAR? I think this would be a fitting tribute to many people, whom I am sure exist, that were like Dave. Paying it forward continuously...

I wonder how many sections would want to open their detailed records to NAR from a safety perspective.  I suspect since NAR insurance is secondary a lot of incidents aren’t reported.  NAR may also not want to know from a coverage perspective.

Yeah, I was only thinking of certification stats. Done locally, within each club. They might not even need to know the names of the certifiers, but I'd be willing to bet that, at least in the West, LUNAR is the leader. But perhaps the NAR could support that effort with some sort of carrot... a recognition of the clubs that have promoted rocketry, and STEM, supported the hobby in general, and kept it generational. So many (now adult) LUNAR members started out as kids. I spoke with Andrew Truong's parents at the memorial. Their story is just like dozens of others at LUNAR that Dave helped write. I suspect that he was not the only one doing this. There are likely dozens of unsung heros in clubs around the country like him.
