On June 25, 2024, the
United States launched
GOES-U (now GOES-19),
the final weather
satellite in the GOES-R
series (GOES is
short for Geostationary
Operational
Environmental
Satellite).

From its orbit 22,000
miles above us, GOES-19
keeps an eye on the
weather and
environmental conditions
here on Earth, including
weather from the sun,
called space
