Hello LUNAR’tics
As you probably know, LUNAR was founded with the charter of providing safe and legal launch services for educational purposes. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, we have provided these services to educational groups at no cost for decades. However, the surge in the ARC contest popularity, combined with our hosting of increasingly high-power flights, has strained our finances. We have not changed our fees for over 2 decades.
Here is the full version so you can understand our plight. Snow Ranch costs us $1,000/year plus $500 for portable toilets per launch. The website costs us $30/month. The storage locker costs us $60/month. Hollister costs us $175/launch. Then there is equipment maintenance, and the government takes a small filing fee from us. Over the last 8 years, we have covered 55% of our expenses. Money earned during the Maker Faire days supported us for those years. We have nearly depleted that surplus. At the board meeting on December 18, the board decided to raise the walk-on fee to $20/launch/family and our membership fees to $50/year/family, starting February 1, 2026. Youth groups such as Scouts and ARC will remain free.
We hope you understand our needs and we all wish you a joyous holiday season. Perhaps you can ask Santa for a LUNAR donation?
