Probably the best way to get things going is to use one of the more
popular distros as a basis. In this way we can get the advantage of
all the latest applications, tools, features and security fixes.
What distro should be used? What distros does existing software, such
as ROS or Player, run best on?
There is also the question of deterministic performance. I think some
of the linux versions targeted as embedded control systems do have
deterministic performance, but is this really important for a robotics
OS?
For example
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/lnxinfo/v3r0m0/index.jsp?topic=/liaai/realtime/liaairtlchar.htm
My guess is that deterministic performance isn't going to be all that
important, unless you're controlling some process with high accuracy,
such as an industrial pick and place.
