Sara (LUMID) was here a while ago, Jonatan (Klostergatan roomie) is with me right now though I'm packing him off to the sunny shores of Goa tomorrow, and Therese and Erike are supposed to come over later this month. Wonder if they can handle +4 .............with no central heating.

Canadians love to discuss the weather, that and hockey (ice not field) eh...
Getting ready to go back to work here after the Christmas and New Year holidays and I am hopefully that 2010 will be a great year for us all, and hopefully for the World as well.
As for the reunion I would suggest Cuba in February or March (as I plan to go then) but that might be a little impractical for most :) Also trying to reign-in my carbon footprint so I might have to take the bus to Brazil if that is where the LUMES re-union will happen. Or carpool, lol. You up for it, Mike?

I just came back to Bangalore from Auroville (close to pondicherry in
tamil nadu). A really cool experiment has been going on there since
the 60s: The concept builds on human unity and is a universal township
in the making with people from over 40 nationalities living there.
The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity – in diversity.
Today Auroville is recognised as the first and only internationally
endorsed ongoing experiment in human unity and transformation of
consciousness, also concerned with - and practically researching into
- sustainable living and the future cultural, environmental, social
and spiritual needs of mankind.
They have turned a complete wasteland to a flourishing green almost
self sustaining community. I was very impressed with the work they
have done with reforesting the area and only organic farming is
allowed, they have solar kitchens, most households use solar power
only and all roads are lit with Solar powered LED. There are stations
where you can charge your electrical cycles or cars etc. pretty nice

Happy new year fellow Lumesians, back home in uganda all is great, Christmas and new year celebrations were very interesting and its really great to be home again, The weather is good as usual and in Kampala city its 21C but ofcourse the impact of climate change are highly visible.
On a career note, i did a summer a course in Venice Italy in october and right now am working with the Ministry of Water and Environment as a Coordinator for Technical support on water and sanitation, the work is interesting though hectic because i have frequent travels all over the country but thanks to LUMES i think i got good training.
Enjoy 2010 and all the best of luck in ensuring a sustainable future

Greetings from Michigan! It's been a wild ride back to the U.S. for the holidays and great to see my family and friends here. Fab, Isaac, Ahoo and I started the trip out together from Copenhagen after a wild week (and then some) with all the COP-15 events going on over there and had a short Roman/Itri-an holiday before heading further west.
I'll be back in Sweden on the 12th and staying until the end of February - if anyone will be craving a falafel or a good swedish snow just let me know, it'd be great to catch up in person there before I leave. Not quite sure where I'll be headed but hopefully somewhere a lot warmer than Malmo or Michigan...(for all you weather junkies out there it's been snowy, keeping below 0 and windy as usual...I guess not that much has changed!)

After a few acceptable non-weather related postings, I feel like talking to
you again. It is indeed very nice to hear from you guys, and that some of us
have already found their place in this world. For me, that is still going to
take some time. After graduation, I started working with a Berlin based
research institute. I wrote a few things and attended a few conferences and
realised how established mainstream sustainability has become in Germany.
Everybody talks about it, but really without any depth. So I decided not to
prolongue the contract and go to Bolivia for a few months instead. I am
going to be dealing with the ecological consequences of mining activities in
the altiplano. After this, I hope to be closer to the actual meaning of my
life. I will keep you posted on that, if you want...And now, I want to hear
from even more people - Mwemezi, Mike, Walter, Junia - how are you??? I wish
you all a very successful 2010!

that we've all told each other exactly how warm or cold it's been in
our neighbourhoods. Yes Sarah, temperature is important.
I goofed around for a couple of months, and also helped my parents
move apartments (within New Bombay). Hung out with all my pals,
sneaked in vodka into all the late night shows at movie theaters, had
the freedom on sitting on a motorbike in summer clothes at 1 am - no
helmet and enjoyed warm surprise rain showers.... then one phone call
& it all changed.
UNDP called about a position that I had forgotten I had applied for,
and asked me to join in 3 days in New Delhi. I think I made quite the
first impression answering the phone all groggy in the afternoon
(partying takes its toll). And it started out as something for 8 weeks
but since has been extended ... not totally sure till when.
I've been loaned out as a consultant to govt of India for the nations
newest rural development program. All I can say is that it's great
boot camp.
So come along to New Delhi (March and October are the best months,
weather wise) and I'll promise you an interesting time.

Hi Guys,
Am sure we all had a wonderful time out there (wherever we are) enjoying the dawn of the great year 2010.
Coming down to issues on climate change i would say the experiences differe but Maryna i would contest your view that Findland is the coldest country on earth (kidding), minus 25 is not that bad.Before i moved to Montreal three months ago i knew scandinavia was the coldest region on earth but people Canada is exceedingly colder.Temps of minus 30 and above are the order of the day,old mother Lund is indeed warm.
All is however cool and it was really great reading from you all.My little life has not really changed,am now permanently based in Canada with my family as we got our permanent residence here here on the skilled migration program.Also managing a little part-time job with Equinox International Logistics and Hydraulics in Montreal while doing paper turning at McGill University.

Hey everybody...was really nice to come back from the holidays and find thousands of e-mails from lumes folks to read. I won’t talk about the weather just that here in Guayaquil is hot and humid..It really sucks around this months…was really happy to go away for new years. I really wanted to wish you all the best in this New Year. I’m up for the reunion in Brazil, maybe some of you will like to come to Ecuador for a couple of days first, and then we all head to Brazil together ha? Maybe Jeff wants to cycle from here…its very nice but you probably get kidnapped in Colombia, especially with that red hair there is no hope for you man hahaha.
In the serious note Im working in the Energy Sector for a Public company, which provides with energy to the city of Guayaquil. Work in the environmental department and we do all kind of interesting projects, so Im very happy for now. Finally, switched to Mac, as I was tired of dealing with that PC piece of crap, so Im part of that 30% of the class who can never shows their graphics and tables in their documents…
Mattias growing strong was in Disney with him and Mariuxi last week he really enjoyed a lot. We finally have our own place, adapting again to living in Ecuador, but happy to be with family and friends, however I think of all of you very often. Have teach my friend to play flip cup, is so much fun and is spreading....All of you are welcome to visit, and really hope to see you again very soon.

Well, I finally handed in my urban paper a few weeks ago (!) and should soon get my papers from Lund after which I can start my traineeship thing at the foreign ministry's climate team. Which I'll hopefully do for the next 6 month after which I'll be unemployed again :) Other than that life is good, I'm in good terms with Helsinki and Finland even though we had a bit of a rough start.
I hope you're all well, and please come and visit! We have snow, a lot of it (65cm at the moment).

The weather: very Swedish, cold, ice, snow, rain, clouds, dark,.... you know
I'm working on a project called Ecokids. I'm teaching kids about nature and environment in an after school programme. In the past few weeks it has surprised me how little children know: where food comes from, what energy is, what birds eat, that plants grow from seeds, etc. I know I'm working in an urban setting with kids who rarely leave their own 'grey' neighbourhoods, but it's stunning to notice how small their basic knowledge is. Positive thing is that I know I'm doing useful work here...
Besides work, I'm taking accordeon classes, next week I start a column writing course, I'm trying to find an appartment and I'm dreaming about the colors I'm going to use to paint the walls (how about a pink bathroom with flowers in all sorts of colors?).

Buses are too packed (most of the time)
Rickshaws (motorized 3 wheelers) are lawless, so they don't wanna go where I work etc etc (Another reason why Bombay rocks, write it down people)
The Metro is in the process of being built right across from where I live.

OK, so if you were to buy a car, would it be a Tata Nano? Are any electric cars (or electric scotters, 'e-bikes' as we call them) on the market in India yet because that would be a good option given that you would not have to drive very far each way to work. And I'm sure you could 'borrow' some electricity to charge your car from the local utility pole or from a neighbour's outlet. Cut those commuting costs.
Also, I think Mirjam is volunteering to be your rickshaw driver ;) I would be down but Canada need me, lol.

A) Too hot (and too cold in the winter) for 2 wheelers/ quadra-ped mammals/ figments of your imaginations. I will admit riding a horse to work did pass my mind, but parking and refuelling seemed to be a challenge.
B) Have asked about the waiting list for the Nano here. It's an awesome car overall, for city driving. Electric cars are not the best idea, because electricity is expensive here (and I dont get paid a gazillion €/month) and in the summer when the demand peaks the supply stoops. Looks like the Nano is winning ...
Also a Nano takes less space than a baby horse. It's 3 mts in lenght.

as we speak, should at least check it out, they are not too expensive
either. But then I also know that the electricity prices in Delhi are
ridiculous and a bit unreliable, so may have to do some cost-benefit
analysis there ey? =) , Otherwise look for a hybrid at least, do not
buy the nano!!!! Go for the camel any day before the Nano =). BTW are
you actually gonna drive the car ;)

Any one else who suggests an animal will automatically be designated as its keeper and carer when Im working or having a life.
And to answer your question Therese - No I was thinking of hiring one of those super tall and well built Sikhs or Punjabi men to be my driver considering its a NANO!
Cam - you need to move beyond Scandinavian heat, 32 C - I wont even break into pespiration!
Nano Arguments aside, Im trying very hard to get my employers to consider my working from Bombay. Don't really want to be here in the summer + I miss Bombay.
