7th International Summer Academy “Energy and the Environment”
Transnational Energy Grids:
Challenges on the Way to Sustainable Energy Transmission
Greifswald, Germany, July 18th – 31st, 2010
For the seventh time since its inception, the interdisciplinary Summer Academy “Energy and the Environment” will convene highly qualified young experts from all regions of the world for an intensive educational experience and exchange of ideas on the overarching theme of energy and the environment. Past Summer Academies have included the participation of highly qualified and motivated participants from more than thirty countries on all five continents, joining an equally diverse faculty of internationally recognised academics, practitioners and officials representing leading government institutions and international organisations.
This year, the Summer Academy will again be hosted by the Baltic university town of Greifswald, where participants will address fundamental challenges of transnational energy grids in the context of climate protection and sustainable energy use. During the first week, the academic programme will address requirements for sustainable energy transmission, from an interdisciplinary perspective including legal, policy and technical considerations. The second week will be devoted to case studies ranging from the proposed Desertec scheme, Baltic regional integrated grid and other similar multinational energy transmission and mobility initiatives. Participants will be integrated into the programme by way of discussions and an opportunity to briefly present their own research. All participants will obtain a university-issued certificate. Participants may also submit an academic paper for publication in the Summer Academy proceedings to obtain a qualified certificate.
As in previous years, the academic programme will be complemented by a highly diverse social programme, including guided tours to area energy facilities (a nuclear fusion research institute and a decommissioned nuclear power plant), a culinary wine tasting, a visit to the Berlin Reichstag, and a sailing trip on the Baltic Sea.
Participation is open to all young researchers and practitioners with a first university degree or significant work experience in energy and environmental policies. A number of partial and full scholarships are available for exceptionally qualified applicants from developing countries and countries with economies in transition. Applications are due by April 12th, 2010. Late applications will only be considered subject to availability of places.
