Hey everyone,
I just got an update. Thing is, non-MNITians are allowed to attend this as well. So if any of you want to do take Fadia on face-to-face, by all means, please do drop by. Please do turn up!

How silly of me to not mention the timing. It's at 2PM on the 9th of December in MNIT (in hall LT-1). I'll be talking with the organizers again and I'll send a final confirmation by tomorrow. Stay tuned! :)
Like i mentioned to n9986 on IRC, the talk should be good for pure entertainment
value too. If you aren't the confrontational type and just want to have a good
laugh, you should bring along some pop-corn. I imagine the experience should be
similar to :

Oh boy! Who is it exactly? And is he (Ankit) getting paid for this trip? :P
@mbuf and lonetwin:
Very entertaining links! :)

Ah! I missed it. I wanted to attend it but couldn't get free from the
college on time. But I would certainly like to know what happened
there. I hope your batchmates took good care of him :P

Just a few things that i thought I should mention for your benefit and for
others too who do not understand why this thread was basically bashing Ankit Fadia.
a. It's good to know that you learned something, however I doubt that anything
Ankit spoke about has any real world value unless you use it as a starting point
to learn the true meaning of hacking. So, if you learned something new then build
on top of it because there is so much more to learn than anything that a con man
like Ankit can teach.
b. If you think Ankit is a giant of knowledge, you have set your standards too
low. Learn and explore on your own and you'll soon realize it doesn't take much
effort to match and even surpass that level of 'giant knowledge'. I am sure
anyone with a net connection can match Ankit's skill level within a week of
learning if they really wanted to. So, choose wisely who you want to idolize.
c. Being funny and entertaining does not compensate for the fact that Ankit
distorts the meaning of hacking, uses nonsensical terms like 'ethical hacking'
to describe the basic level (and dated) cracking techniques and misleads people
into thinking that he is some sort of a wizard of dark arts which they too can
become by attending his course. By doing these things he does not only make a
fool of himself in the eyes of real hackers but also confuses gullible people
who then follow in the same path.
So, do not be gullible and taken advantage of by the charm and wit of frauds
like Fadia. If you do, that 'ethical hacker' certificate which you get will only
be seen as a piece of paper certificating that you are a gullible idiot in the
eyes of people who know what Ankit does.
HTH,
cheers,
Apologies for going off topic

India is best.
Apologies for going off topic
Way to go guys. When are we gonna have a meet next ??
I just got back to my system and replied to you on IRC before I read the mails.
So, just to set things clear:
a. The mail below is *not* a personal attack. I know and understand that you
wrote what you thought was right and I am sure there might be least a few other
people think who think the same. So, I am addressing all such people.
b. It doesn't make a difference to me what you think of me or about Ankit or
about anything discussed here for that matter. My mails earlier and now is only
to express and opinion and possibly educate.
that said, let me get on with the response ...

My "giant of knowledge" comment and the bit about setting your standards too low
was only another way of saying Ankit is not really special. It is not even like
you have to be a dedicated single minded
'sitting-in-your-room-learning-for-24-hours-straight' type of person to match
that level of understanding.
I did not mean to imply that /all/ 'hacking' (even to use ankit's term) is
easily grasped in the matter of a few days.
I meant to say, what you learned at the event (ie: the stuff you wrote in the
reply to acedip's mail) is not the result of years of study and research. Anyone
serious about security learns these things as the basics !
Maybe some links will help you understand that even in the field of cracking and
computer security, there are much better resources to learn than Mr. Fadia:
http://www.hackerhighschool.org/
http://www.hackthissite.org/
http://www.phrack.org/ (seems to be down at the moment)
real world computer security is not some dark glamorous dark art. It is hard
work and you need to have an inclination towards it. Using tools to break known
security vulnerability that somebody else made is easy. Actually securing your
system or from the other side trying to break well secured systems is a totally
different matter. I suggest that you subscribe for a few days to the bugtraq
mailing list at:
...to get a feel of what real world computer security world is like.
Let me offer an example: lock picking is an art, and your local key maker in the
market can certainly open most common locks and build keys from them but if you
think he is a 'giant of knowledge' in the business of creating locks, you are
totally mistaken. Get the parallel ?
Now, speaking of Mr. Fadia I don't know if you read the other links sent in this
thread, but I'll just paste it here for convenience sake:
http://www.ankurb.info/2007/12/05/ankit-fadia-certified-ethical-idiot/
http://tutorial.web4all.in/archives/fsf-tn/2006-April/000293.html
To understand why, we as Indians should *not* be 'proud' of people like Ankit read:
http://attrition.org/errata/charlatan.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankit_Fadia#Controversy
http://itsallpartoftheplan.wordpress.com/2009/09/26/demolishing-ankit-fadia-v-0-01/
Like i said, choose your idols wisely.
If you are interested in computer security, besides learning from the links
above, joining this group would be more beneficial than any 'ethical hacking'
course:
All that said, if you want to learn more about what hacker/cracker culture see:

also read the link Shishir pointed out.
If you want to get a feel of what the 'underground' cracking scene is (or rather
was) like read:

Now, coming to the age bit, if you think at age Ankit is some sort of genius at
age 24 although he doesn't have even a *single* line of code publicly available,
how does he compare to:

the /facts/ expressed but on /who/ is expressing it ? chew on that for a while.
