Hey everyone,
I am running ubuntu 13.04 and Windows 8 on my system. However, I have experienced that while using ubnutu I get a battery backup of around 2 hrs whereas windows 8 runs for about 3.5 hrs (considering similar usage). Also Ubuntu heats up my laptop, I fear it might damage my hardware. Have tried using "Jupiter", but in vain. How do I resolve this issue?

Hi,

Jupiter is a discontinued project now and does not work on 13.04. You can try using TLP.
Installation guide:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tlp tlp-rdw smartmontools ethtool

The heating issue is most probably because of your graphic card. I'm pretty sure your system has Nvidia or ATI graphic card. Since the driver for your graphic card is missing, the card is always in the on state. Hence, your system heats up. Google for "<you graphic card name> turn off in ubuntu" and you'll get what you need.

I have an Nvidia card. I installed bumblebee and since then I have been getting about 2-2.5 hours backup. It is still low but I was getting 1 hour before bumblebee. And also, my laptop doesn't heat up anymore.

Thanks Shashank and Aarti.
Well as long as Jupiter is concerned I guess it has now support for ubuntu 13.04. Also installing TLP didn't help much

Yes I am using a Nvidia graphic card  on my laptop. Installing Bumblebee, did solve heating issues but improvement in battery life was not significant.
I tried installing official Nvdia drivers, but I was unable to install them due to some "X server" issue. If you can help me, I will post entire problem here. I tried surfing web for it, but couldn't find any satisfactory results. Thanks again.
