Did connectify work properly in your laptop with windows?
If yes, you can try asking on a ubuntu forum(such as askubuntu ) giving as much detail as possible.Or someone from LUG might answer on this thread.
If not, then probably the problem is with the wireless card(AP mode not supported) and the only thing you can use is an ad-hoc network(network icon --> create new wifi network).Since most android/windows phones do not detect ad-hoc networks, this only works for other laptops.

It's nice that the OP had an iPhone, which works fine with adhoc wifi networks.
