Greetings,
This is a general post on some observations I have made on this list. We are really not using the potential of these mailing lists to the full extent intended . Mailing lists or mailers are incredibly powerful development and discussion platforms. Somehow this list is more like a pasteboard for a bunch of announcements and a a few people sharing or discussing something.
Mailing lists are intended to serve the purpose of discussion and interaction (of course dedicated to the topic intended) . They are a great way to find solutions to common problems , discuss ideas and post opinions. Many a time we individually ping or mail a person for advice and help or even for some "point of view" discussions. Although this sometimes serves the purpose it isn't necessarily the best way . IF you were to post the same queries and ideas and discussions to the list it would be lot lot better. Given the folks subscribed to this mailer , we have some very smart and talented people around and some great alumni too . Many a time we find someone with a neater , faster and better solution. Perhaps a different and more well thought out point of view . Not just that these discussions may benefit a large number of other users and introduce them to things that they haven't stumbled on before. Also it serves as a archived searchable reference for future use/reference on similar issues. (HUGE BENEFIT from my experience ). IITD & JNU Lug , Manipal LUG have a fairly active mailer and so do many many groups and orgs and it has worked for them , why not try it here.
Right now many of you may be on the verge of shouting SPAM! . Yes, indeed that may be an issue but it can be dealt with . Use a bunch of filtering, archiving & labeling options and it is a very trivial issue. Most modern mailboxes have this facility . And if we may need to ban people with senseless/unrelated/marketing/trending spam we could do that too , after-all the list is moderated.
People please get active and come out speak , discuss and ask ! Even if i learned one new tiny thing from these random mails once a year I think it's worth it IMHO.
That's my two cents.
Cheers !
