I guess this is my introduction to your group. I found this when I was
working on getting Hardy Heron configured on my Toshiba Satellite. As
a side note, make sure you download the source for the Linux-
Restricted-Modules package first if you have an AMD/ATI setup like I
do. You will need to open it and compile and install the restricted
ATI display drivers in order to have a functioning GNOME desktop once
you remove jockey.I found (through trial and error) that the best time
is post-removal of the packages and prior to rebooting.

P.S. Sorry for the lack of formal introduction, I will be an Aerospace
Engineering student starting this fall (Undergraduate).

Sorry for being so forward with the changes, but I started to repair
the two existing links and got on a roll.

Don't worry. I don't think I formally introduced myself either. And hey, you actually go to UCF! XD

Don't most, if not all, of the members of this group attend UCF?

For the most part, yes.  However, there are quite a few alumni that still hang around on the mailing lists.

On a side note, good choice on UCF for aerospace!

How about those of us that don't go to UCF, never went to UCF, but
joined the mailing list of the closest LUG?

Oh course, does it say something that the nearest LUG I found was two
hours away?

Thank's for the vote of confidence on the BSAE choice. I actually
started out at FIT in the same program when I finished high school (in
2002, I had a rough time there, but I met the girl of my dreams and
we're still together--so it wasn't a total loss). I apologize up front
for not bringing much to the group in terms of Linux experience or
ability. Does the group do any sort of regular activities on-campus
(and/or have a regular office)?

I believe most meetings get announced here on the list, at least when
their hasn't been a meeting in a while. I don't believe the LUG has a
room, last semester I believe the LUG met in a building's lobby.

As for activites, there was talk some time ago in starting a FTP
mirror, but I don't think it went anywhere, and a few months ago there
was some Xbox Linux business going on.

What's going on this year?

(in other news, I'll be visiting UCF sometime soon, I'll post to the
list when I know my plans. How's UCF's Computer Science major?)

This might sound a bit silly, but has the group ever really done a
tech demonstration for the general student body (like MS is doing to
salvage Vist'a rep) to try and spread the word about open source, or
anything along those lines?

The user group page appears to have been vandalize, I don't have the
authority to repair all of it, but I will restore what I can. Would
someone with Admin privileges take a look and see if he/she can repair
the remainder.

Thank you,
Ricky

Not that I know. We've done some minor demonstrations for each other
and try working on some projects. Everyone from last year was pretty
much a programmer, almost all CS majors (black sheep CpE here =p). We
usually spent meeting times solving linux issues and talking about
whatever projects we were working on and other general tech.

Also, our niche in HEC rocked, though we'll need to get a room if LUG
grows considerably. Anybody got plans on when we're going to start
having meetings again? And I think I still have flyer designs from
before, we just need to make some and get them certified by the eecs
college to post up in the engineering buildings.

If you are a black sheep, what does that make me? Back to the subject
of meetings, who normally made those decisions?

If anyone else is willing to collaborate with me, how does a week or
two sound for a meeting? I don't know who used to do this, but I am
willing to help.

Generally speaking someone would think of a meeting time
and ask what everyone else thought about it.

If anyone had problems those problems were voiced
and we worked it out.

Hence this club has historically been rather informal
about procedures and a "standard way" of doing something.

Usually we'd meet on thursdays at something like 7 in the HEC second
floor lobby on the right. I talked with chad yesterday and it turns
out that our previous faculty member is gone. I'm open to meeting any
night, though monday and wednesday i can't make it until 730. I'd say
our first meeting priority is identifying a new faculty sponsor so we
can actually be an official club again. On top of that, I'd say we
need to have a serious discussion about advertising the club. So far
we've had a fairly small group of highly-knowledgeable people and
generally haven't wanted to advertise a lot because our 'facilities'
couldn't really handle much more than just us. I'm not sure if officer
elections would be a good idea immediately, but we should consider it
at least.

I know last time we ended up alternating with the ACM meetings on
thursday nights, and that was enjoyable. I'd like to see more ACM/LUG
crossover because there are a lot of people in ACM that do use linux
but haven't joined LUG because, honestly, most of them have no clue we
exist. If the club does grow, it seems we'll need more directed
meetings compared to our previous general tech chat and winghouse
(though i'm still dramatically in favor of winghouse after meetings
=p). And dare I suggest we perhaps get some project involvement from
ARC or SEDS? I think we could have some really awesome projects this
year if we get more cross-club involvement.

The only other thing I'd suggest is that people let each other know
when they can't make the meeting so we can cancel if needed. There've
been a few times where only one or two of us have showed up. Here's to
another great year of LUG =D

I agree. I realize that I'm coming from a high school prospective (I lodged my UF admission papers Sunday, and have everything done except the essay for UCF) but I think I will be at least the same. Our drama club has no money (all the money from last year's performance of "Anne" was stolen), and band annually has a dinner to raise money. Someone had to awesome idea of having drama perform at tha band dinner, to help with money. At the end of last year, National Honor Society collected reusable school supplies to donate to improverish childern in the area, which First Priority (which normally doesn't do projects) joined in.

I'm sure the same will work at the college level, if not better.

(If anyone is wondering why I joined the UCF LUG, it's because it's the closest LUG I could find, which is sad, considering it's 3 hours away from here. No one's gotten bad at me, so thanks. ;-) )
