I had to write briefly about a wild coincidence that happened to me today.

Most of you know that I'm an architect.  I design and build and develop buildings, but as an ongoing part of my practice we do property inspections, reports, etc.  I got a call today from a homeowner of a duplex at 97th and Crandon who was having structural issues with his foundation.  He's about 56 and lives in the original house he grew up in.  His parents remained there after most of us moved; he moved away also, but has come back to live in, fix up, and sell the house now that they are gone.

Turns out he went to Our Lady Gate of Heaven, and we had quite a conversation strolling down memory lane.  I couldn't remember exactly who lived near that intersection, but he remembered Carol Schneider, Sonny Schwartz, and a few others we know.  It was quite fun reminiscing with him.  I cc'd him on this email so he could see the Luella site and enjoy the memories.

That's it.  Nothing big.  :-)

Jeff:

Unless he sees these postings and changes his mind, he preferred some anonymity (his family was the victim of some identity theft.)  Sorry Jeff

Great story, Kerry.
It must've been great recalling stories with this guy.
OLGH was always a great big mystery to me... I LOVED riding my bike
through their campus...it was huge and had a lot of cool nooks and
crannies to go through...It was also the gateway between 99th street
(where CKI sat) and what I think was officially Marionnette Manor
(Brennan being the middle block). If I'm getting my geography and
names wrong, I'm sure someone here will correct me...
I didn't really know any kids that went to OLGH, or at least I didn't
think I did. I remember they wore uniforms (boys with a tie and white
shirt; girls in skirts and white shirt) and it seemed so foreign to
me. Today, funnily, my daughter, Annie, goes to an all girls school
(she's in 7th grade) and wears a uniform. It's nothing like OLGH, but
it reminds me of that anyway. The besides-the-point part of this tale
is that I'm thrilled that she wears a uniform...it takes the whole
style and image factor out of her school experience, and I'm loving
that.

Thanks Benj:

This guy had some funny stories.  Apparently, OLGH did not like Benny's, the penny candy store on 100th, so they forbid their students from going there so as to not bring the tainted matter into the school.  So he and his friends would take their ties off in front of the store to semi-disguise themselves, and go in anyway and binge.  If I recall, binging there probably cost about 30 cents.

He said his backyard has slag under it, a steel byproduct.  Apparently, the Manor was built on spoil from the steel mills.

To protect this persons identity by all means forward my email to them
as I lived at 9678 S. Crandon (2nd duplex from 97th) so surely I must
know who this person is as I generally knew my neighbors at least a
half dozen doors in each direction. Also being close to 54 am fairly
close to his age. I'd sure be curious to know. Although I must say I
didn't associate with anyone from OLGH as I recall. My brother and I
made quite a game of hopping over the fence on 98th and Brennen and
moving along the hedges of bushes along the entire West side of the
property to take the short cut to school. There were certainly a few
times we were chased by a custodian or two from there. Oh
well.........but do forward my email just the same. I would be curious
just in case this person remembers me. I must say I'm a bit surprised
the slag went as far as Crandon though. Makes me wonder if we weren't
all exposed to far too much carcinogenic materials in our childhood. :-
