radeon hd4650 problem

Hi,
I'm running 8.0-RELEASE-p2.
I am trying to use the radeon (or radeonhd) driver for my Sapphire HD4650
card. But it doesn't work. I get a black screen just before the logon/login
screen should appear. And my pc freezes. I can not get into a console with
alt-f<x>. The only way out is a cold reset/reboot.
The only driver working now is Vesa in 1280x1024, but that leaves a black
border of 7-8 cm on both sides of my 23 inch monitor...
I asked for help on the OpenSuse mailinglist (i found their email address in
the Xorg.0.log) but they said it is the drm kernel module that is not up to
date (see thread on http://lists.opensuse.org/radeonhd/2010-03/msg00012.html).
I manually recreated a new /root/xorg.conf.new and copied it to /X11, but with
the same negative result so far.
I am pasting my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log here.

The linux folks don't know much about what is going on in FreeBSD...
Especially not the suse folks. The ATI/AMD folks are fairly aware,
but...

This is an agp card?

I have an idea of what is going wrong, but I would like to see an Xorg
log file using the radeon driver to verify. Based on the addresses
reported, I suspect that your ring buffer is being mapped inside of the
framebuffer, which usually appears as corruption along with other odd
issues. If so, I already have patches for that...

Other possible things to try are to force it into pci mode.

The Xorg.0.log file was below in the previous mail, under the xorg.conf file.
But i can post it pastebin if you want it.

Where do i put that option ? In the Section Device ?

Yes, exactly. The same for the options adjusting the AGPMode.

This log file is with the radeon driver, not the radeonhd (as i used the
radeon driver in xorg.conf). I can try with the radeonhd driver in xorg.conf
and save that xorg.0.log to have both.

radeonhd does not have an option to force PCI mode... Only radeon does.

As rnoland@ has mentioned, you need to use the radeon driver instead of
the radeonhd driver. You need to change this line to 'Driver "radeon"'

In my first post i used the radeon driver. The xorg.0.log is under de
xorg.conf file. In my second posting i used the radeonhd driver with the
corresponding xorg.0.log.
Neither driver works so far.

Ok, it seems to get better ! Now the system does not freeze completely any
more. But i get a square cursor now when i should log in (still a black
screen). But i can get into a console now.

Ok, you are effected by the overlapping map issue, (at least in the
forced pci case). I think this may also be the issue in AGP mode.

You can try this patch, hopefully it will still apply cleanly. Please
try using the radeon driver and both AGP and PCI modes.

Uh, what kernel are you patching against? r600_blit.c was part of the
code to enable 3d on r600 and should be in 7+ STABLE branches.

Ok, it's a little tricky to generate a patch of just the drm changes,
but here goes...

cd /usr/src/sys/dev/drm
patch -p0 -s -i drm-rel8-to-stable8-dev.patch

Then you should be able to apply the previous patch... Note that this
should also get you 3D support in the process...
