Would it be possible to create a libusb-config shell script and install
it in /usr/bin?
libusb from ports installed such a script and it is the standard way to
find libusb and know how to call it.
I suspect that adding it would also reduce patches for a lot of ports
(and this makes it easier when you are trying stuff direct from the
maintainer as you don't need a local patch)

I guess if other generic FreeBSD libraries don't do this, it will be hard I
guess.
You mean that we create a .pc file for libusb ?

That is true but I think this is a special case as libusb is widely
regarded as an external library by software devs.

Hmm, I meant the libusb-config shell script but I guess the .pc file
would be necessary too :(

Can you provide a pseudo-libusb port patch for this?

I second on this patch. I have a usb2sata transmission line, which
uses the same chip. Before applying the patch, my fbsd 8-p1 box
generated a lot of the following errors:
kernel: g_vfs_done():da0s1d[READ(offset=-2274851640486166528,
length=16384)]error = 5
kernel: g_vfs_done():da0s1d[READ(offset=8863643100058288128,
length=16384)]error = 5
kernel: g_vfs_done():da0s1d[READ(offset=6140769717801367552,
length=16384)]error = 5
and made the hdd inaccessible. Only newfs would make it working
again, but the error would happen again.
After applying the patch, the usb2sata line worked fine. I strongly
suggest accepting the patch!

Ok, I have done some more testing with the TEMPer. I have kldloaded uchcom.
root@testhost-1# uname -a
FreeBSD testhost-1.kg4.no 8.0-STABLE FreeBSD 8.0-STABLE #0: Sat Dec 12 23:49:41 CET 2009 ro...@testhost-1.kg4.no:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64

Dec 27 23:07:43 testhost-1 kernel: ucom0: CH340 detected
I took TEMPer.c[1] from Tollef Fog Heen's site, changed the device from /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/ttyU0 and compiled with
gcc -lm -o TEMPer2 TEMPer2.c
and tested it:
root@testhost-1# ./TEMPer2
Init starting
Init done
^Croot@testhost-1#
It hangs after "Init done" until I break out of it with Ctrl-C. This is strange, the same code works fine un Linux:
tingo@kg-home:~$ uname -a
Linux kg-home 2.6.31-16-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 8 04:01:29 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

I wonder if it is the driver in FreeBSD or something different in the tty initialization?
Anyway, I have made a FreeBSD[2] and a Linux[3] page with all the details.

I get one of the TEMPers from Brando some months ago, and finally managed to put a small command line utility together: http://wiki.zs64.net/TEMPer_USB_Thermometer
I did look at the sample code in http://err.no/src/TEMPer.c, but decided to start from scratch, using the LM75 data sheet. On my 8-stable box it's working just fine, also in VMware with -current. I did have to reduce the IIC clock frequency down to 100 Hz to get it work in a stable fashion though.

I notice there don't seem to have been any responses to your question.
Whilst I can't answer it either, you might try ask in freebsd-questions.

>Description:
My western digital mybook external usb drive with idVendor=0x1058 and idProduct=0x0901 did work when a zpool was added to the drive due to it not having a synchronize cache. Adding the quirk 0x4000, UQ_MSC_NO_SYNC_CACHE, to usb_quirk.c and recompiling the kernel fixes the issue and ZFS works flawlessly. I've attached a patch that adds the quirk.

Create a zpool on Western Digital Mybook external harddrive.

Apply patch to add UQ_MSC_NO_SYNC_CACHE quirk and recompile kernel.
