Ok, I'm now fighting with this for hours. I have upgraded one of my servers to
5.3 to be able to reproduce this. I couldn't.
So I downloaded the whole pointyhat.freebsd.org build environment for 5.x from
http://pointyhat.freebsd.org/errorlogs/i386-5-bindist.tar. I added a pristine
copy of ports.tgz from the 5.3 release to it and then chrooted into it. I
tried the build of /usr/ports/net-mgmt/nagios-plugins and succeeded.
At this point I have to conclude that there is a:
a) something I'm missing
b) the build scripts on pointyhat.freebsd.org are broken
Please either help me find out what is going on or remove the BROKEN, as the
port obviously is *not* broken.
I know that. But I can't reproduce it, neither on a 5.3 system, nor on a
chroot in the build system.

Hopefully, because I can't reproduce it, no matter how hard I try.

From the buildlog:
---snip
checking for ps... /bin/ps
** Unable to find usable ps syntax
---snap
This causes PS_COMMAND & PS_FORMAT to be undefined in plugins/config.h.
There's probably a shortcoming in the configure check which makes it fail on
a pointyhat clusternode (perhaps Kris can provide you with a tarball of a
failed build, so you can take a look at config.log).
