India is rich with crafts and it has become an inherent cultural identity for people. The craft-person are custodians of tradition and heritage but the irony is that their knowledge and creativity are never valued by masses. While appreciating the workmanship in a craft we neglect the value of intellectual property that is inherited by artisans and is ever evolving. To bridge the gap between artisan, consumer and designer and to evolve a respectable co-design, Judy Frater started an initiative in 2005 to empower artisans with design process and business acumen which first shaped into KalarakshaVidyalaya and now Somaiya Kala Vidya Academy in Kutch.
The
transformation that the initiative brought to artisans in Kutch inspired many.
Jaspal Kalra in his own way tried to work on various issues of Chikan and is
now trying to create a similar model for Lucknow. First in this row is the Suf
to Chikan project by Somaiya Kala Vidya, which is an artisan to artisan
co-design project that will culminate in an exhibition in Mumbai.
We would witness a rare opportunity when a craft revolutionist like Judy comes
to Lucknow to share her experiences and vision and Jaspal would talk of
relevance to chikan and putting together of a design program for chikan
artisans.
Judy Frater is Somaiya Kala Vidya’s Founder Director. An Ashoka Fellow, Frater
was founder and Director of Kala RakshaVidhyalaya. Under her eight- year
tenure, Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya rose to international prominence for its unique
approach to education of artisans. Frater was awarded the Sir Misha Black Medal
for Design Education in 2009, and the Crafts Council of India Kamla award in
2010 for her work. In her native USA, she was Associate Curator of the Textile
Museum in Washington DC. In 2005, she published Threads of Identity: Embroidery
and Adornment of the Nomadic Rabaris.
Jaspal is a Visiting Professor and a research Scholar with NIFT.Helikestoworkwithtraditionalcraftand tacit knowledge for its revival and design development. He has been researching on craft of Chikankari for and also on product development, realising that it needs artisan awareness of design skill and quality appreciation,as well as consumer awareness about this art-form.He hasdevelopedthe curriculumfor courses for Pearl Academy and Somiaya Kala Vidya.
