I switched to LuaJ anyway, but mostly I use JavaX.

Wow, I'm surprised that they introduced a dependency on ncurses in Lua 5.3.3 for linux.  That is an amazingly bad idea.  I am struggling to get 5.3.3 to work on my system now.  However LuaJIT etc work just fine.  I presume they don't really like Linux very much though they are forced to kind of support it.  The reluctance means they are taking shortcuts they should not take and they are just testing on their own machines that are pre-loaded with libraries and headers that are not on other peoples machines.
