Subject: [Fuad] Sad news - Maritime Program Student

Hi All,

It is with a sad heart that I write to the Program and Department about the passing of one of our students. Agnes Milowka drowned yesterday in Tank Cave (Mt. Gambier) doing what she loved the most - exploring underground caves. Agnes graduated with a Diploma in Maritime Archaeology a year ago and was currently enrolled part-time in the MA to complete a thesis in 2011.

Agnes was a supervisor on previous field schools and a participant in our overseas practicum to Florida, USA. She was an absolute star and always had a smile on her face. First to get in the water and last to get out! She was a very experienced diver and cave explorer and has a long list of accomplishments including holding the record in Australia for cave penetration by a female. She not only dived here in Australia but spent many months diving in Florida’s cave systems and made new exploration discoveries linking two cave systems (Peacock and Baptizing Springs). Recently, Ag was a stunt double for the new James Cameron movie “Sanctum.” See for yourself her accomplishments at: http://www.agnesmilowka.com/

It goes without saying that Agnes will be missed by many, many people. We’ve got a long way to go to keep up with the exploration she would have accomplished if it weren’t for this tragedy. Here is an article that I think says something about the true nature of her character:

Best,

Jen
