Summary: BTT is hiring a seasonal field technician (July – August remote, September – December in Key West) to assist in all fieldwork activities for a bonefish (Albula vulpes) spawning project in Key West, Florida. Bonefish are an important recreational sportfish throughout the Caribbean, and little is known about their spawning behavior in South Florida. This research project aims to tag bonefish with acoustic transmitters, identify locations of Pre-Spawning Aggregations (PSAs), and track spawning movements during their spawning events. Depending on job performance and job availability with BTT, the position could extend beyond this 6 month period.

Job Duties: This project will involve extensive fieldwork (~70% of your time will be spent in the field) on boats in the Key West marine environment angling and tagging bonefish, maintaining acoustic arrays, and monitoring for PSAs. Fieldwork activities involve long days on the water and oftentimes will extend into the night. The technician should be prepared to spend ~3-5 consecutive days in the field per week and must be able to conduct fieldwork in hot temperatures with high sun exposure. The technician will assist in hook-and-line angling for bonefish, surgical implantation of acoustic tags in bonefish, diving (SCUBA) for retrieval and maintenance of acoustic receivers, use of active tracking VR100 acoustic receivers, boat and trailer operation, data collection and QA/QC, and may assist in statistical analyses (although experience with statistical software is not required).

Requirements: Working towards or successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., biology, ecology, environmental science, fisheries ecology). Must be at least 18yrs of age.

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Fieldwork experience

·         Boat and trailer operation experience

·         Scuba diving certification

·         Ability to swim in open water/ocean environments

·         Fishing experience

·         Ability to work in high temperature and sun exposure conditions

·         Ability to work long hours in the field

·         Valid driver’s license

·         Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs

·         Able to work independently and under the direction of a supervisor

·         Knowledge of data entry, data QA/QC, Excel, Word, PowerPoint

Hot To Apply: Please send an email copying both Dr. Ross Boucek (ro...@bonefishtarpontrust.org) and Dr. Nick Castillo (ncas...@fiu.edu) with the subject line “PSA Technician + your name”.
