Job Announcement: NRCS Area Forester GS-460-12, Fresno and Petaluma, California

Please share this job announcement for two very, very cool forestry jobs with NRCS with California.  Please pass this announcement to alumni and soon-to-graduate graduate students.  This is a rare opportunity for a mid- to late-career forester to help implement ecosystem conservation practices on private lands…and work directly with two RNR alumni biologists!  I’m the Area Biologist now for California Area 2 (Petaluma) and Jesse Bahm is the Area Biologist for Area 3 (Fresno).  These are very important positions for NRCS in California.

Open Period: March 16, 2021-March 29, 2021

*There is also an entry level forester position open in Petaluma: USAJOBS - Job Announcement (this will be posted until it is filled, or until July 15th, whatever comes first)

A little plug for the type of work we’re doing in Area 2 (Petaluma-based position): the selected candidate will be working in one of the most beautiful and diverse regions, spanning from the oak savannahs and chaparral of Santa Barbara County to the redwood forests of the Sonoma County coast!  We are doing a lot of work on helping private landowners recover from wildfires and balance forest wildlife habitat needs and economic needs.  We do a lot of work in Northern Spotted Owl habitat – that’s the majority of conversations I have with our foresters concerns owl habitat.  Petaluma is a medium-sized city about 45 minutes from downtown San Francisco and located in the heart of the Napa/Sonoma wine country.  It’s also home to numerous craft breweries.  There’s great hiking, surfing, fishing, sailing, and of course, lots of top-quality refreshments.  During normal times, there are festivals, concerts, and professional car/motorcycle races happening throughout the year in the Petaluma area. I work out of our area office in Salinas, but I travel to Sonoma County for fun and work regularly.  It’s a fantastic area.  The majority of our private lands forestry projects are in Sonoma, Marin, and Napa Counties, so our Area Forester will be housed in our Petaluma Office.  That field office staff in Petaluma are all great people.  I can’t speak highly enough of them!

Area 3 includes riparian forests in the Central Valley to the conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada!  Fresno is a short drive from Yosemite National Park.  I’ve only been to Fresno twice, so I don’t know much about it.  I really enjoy working with my Area Biologist counterpart, Jesse Bahm, but my interactions with other Area 3 staff is very limited.  But if someone is interested in that position, I can put them in touch with Jesse or other folks in the Fresno office.

Hope you all are doing well!  Thanks for helping us promote these positions!
