BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:  This position is engaged in professional services and scientific work involving the conservation and management of inland fisheries, including the protection, preservation, and enhancement of Maine’s inland fisheries and wildlife resources.  The Invasive Aquatic Coordinator works at the main headquarters of MDIFW and serves as a member of the Fisheries Statewide Support Team, while coordinating invasive fish and wildlife threats and concerns on behalf of the Bureau of Resource Management. The position reports to the Director of Fisheries and Hatcheries. 

The Invasive Aquatic Coordinator will: 

  • Serve as the point of contact on behalf of the Bureau of Resource Management in the coordination, collaboration, and response to invasive threats with a focus on fish and wildlife.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement statewide planning to manage existing and new threats.
  • Coordinate the development of outreach to create public awareness and encourage responsible actions by the public.
  • Coordinate development of surveillance monitoring programs and track statewide occurrences.
  • Develop proactive awareness and response to regional threats not yet present in Maine.
  • Prioritize and develop strategies to prevent spread and remediate existing instate threats.
  • Manage the Fisheries Division Chemical Reclamation Program (staff certifications, training, equipment, permitting, planning, design, outreach, and coordination of chemical reclamation projects).
  • Coordinate with state and federal agencies, including the Department of Environmental Protection’s Invasive Plant Program, to efficiently utilize and share available resources.
  • Chair and facilitate committee meetings and stakeholder work groups.

The scope of work is broad and statewide with varying levels of complexity.  Work is performed under limited supervision and in accordance with the requirements established by senior management.  Statewide travel among the seven Regional Management Headquarters is expected.
