Dear Forestry and Environmental Science Academic Leaders, 

The Longleaf Al​​liance has an exciting funding opportunity for your graduate students in forestry, ecology, natural resources, and related fields.

We are now accepting applications for The Owen Fellowship, a $20,000 graduate student scholarship supporting advanced research that contributes to the protection, management, and restoration of the longleaf pine ecosystem. 

Application Window:
September 1, 2025 – January 23, 2026 

About the Fellowship

Now in its third round, The Owen Fellowship is offered in conjunction with the 16th Biennial Longleaf Conference, taking place October 27–30, 2026, in Williamsburg, VA. The selected Fellow will:

  • Receive $20,000 in support for their research.
  • Attend the 2026 Biennial Longleaf Conference.
  • Submit an article for publication in The Longleaf Leader magazine.
  • Present a poster and research presentation at the 2028 Biennial Longleaf Conference. 

Required Application Materials

As outlined in the fellowship announcement (page 1):

  • 2-page research project proposal and funding needs
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of support from faculty advisor
  • Unofficial transcript
  • High-resolution applicant photo
  • Confirmation of student membership with The Longleaf Alliance ($25 student rate) 

Who Should Apply

Graduate students whose research will advance understanding of the longleaf pine ecosystem—ecology, genetics, physiology, restoration, conservation, or related disciplines—are strongly encouraged to apply. Examples of current and past awardees’ work are highlighted in the attached flyer, including research on genetic diversity and longleaf pine physiological processes.
