This person will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of research projects ranging from Seaside Sparrows to Whooping Cranes, with a heavy emphasis on waterfowl banding and transmitter studies.  This is a great position for an undergrad contemplating graduate school or someone that just likes a lot of cool fieldwork.

This is a research technician position at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge (RWR) near Grand Chenier, LA.  The incumbent will perform ongoing and future refuge research activities associated with coastal systems with special emphasis on threatened and endangered species, species in decline, fisheries, waterfowl, and other avian species.  This position will also perform stewardship responsibilities over the Department’s habitat management programs at the refuge.  RWR is situated in a challenging coastal environment where mosquitoes, snakes, alligators, and other pests are common.  Climatic conditions and semi-fluid soils unique to this area make the job physically demanding.  The incumbent must be able to lift 50 pounds.  The incumbent should be proficient with the operation of ATVs, outboard boats, GPS technology, data QA/QC, field techniques, and species identification.

 

80% (E) Research, Management, Monitoring

 

·           Works under the supervision of the research coordinator to carry out scientific investigations to gain information necessary to manage Louisiana's renewable natural resources, wetlands, and the 72,000 acre RWR.

·           Assists the research coordinator with wildlife and wetlands ecology research at RWR with emphasis on waterfowl, other avian species, threatened and endangered species, and fisheries.

·           Works with staff biologists, graduate students, and other collaborating scientists (state, national, international) in the facilitation and implementation of high quality research at RWR and beyond.

·           Performs habitat and species monitoring through biological surveys.

·           Operates transport equipment safely (ATVs, outboard motors, airboats) in order to get staff biologists and collaborating scientists to their destinations.

·           Participates in banding efforts for long-term statewide research and management initiatives.

·           Performs research data entry and QA/QC of such data.

·           Assist Habitat Manager in the management of RWR.

·           Works with the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area and Whooping Crane staff in research, monitoring, and management activities.

 

10% (E) Administrative Duties

 

·           Provides advice and recommendations to supervisory personnel regarding projects, programs, and job priorities to optimize management of the Refuge.

·           Prepares various reports, correspondence, timesheets, expense forms, invoices, and purchase orders, as well as entering research data.

·           Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops for work plan coordination and to obtain/provide continuing education and/or safety training.

 

10% Other

 

·           Provides wetlands/waterfowl management technical assistance to private and public sector individuals.

·           Train field personnel (technicians, field crew, graduate students, and student employees) in proper techniques to gather scientific data (fish sampling, banding waterfowl, tagging and handling alligators, boat operations, etc.).

·           Conducts field trips for civic, public, and private groups on wetland ecosystem management that includes habitat improvement and stabilization on Department and private property.

·           Other additional duties assigned.
