Fossil Rim invests in the future by providing formalized training to foster talented young people into the professions of wildlife conservation and education, veterinary medicine and the care of husbandry and wildlife. Many of our dedicated, intelligent and hardworking Fossil Rim interns go on to work in zoological, wildlife and conservation fields. Providing quality hands-on conservation training is one of the efforts of which Fossil Rim is most proud.
Education Internships
An undergraduate degree is required in wildlife management, conservation biology, education or a related discipline. You must have a valid driver’s license.
Conservation Education Internships
We are accepting internship applications. For the January-June positions, the deadline is October 1st. For the May-November position, the deadline is March 1st. A $300-per-month stipend (for expenses) and free onsite housing are provided.
If you want to have up-close animal interactions while educating the public, then the Conservation Education Internship is for you. At Fossil Rim, you will promote environmental education and wildlife conservation through a diverse mix of compelling learning experiences, including fun interactive programs, hikes and games.
The Conservation Education Interns work with camps, schools, families and other audiences to present a variety of educational programs. You will be trained in giving guided tours that explore our 7-mile Scenic Wildlife Drive. This will provide you, as well as our guests, personal encounters with many of our endangered animals.
Interns also can help care for the program animals: snakes, tarantulas, and hissing cockroaches, with more to be added. The wide variety of teaching opportunities and educational training provides the Conservation Education Intern with an exciting array of new skills and experiences that will benefit the intern in the future.

Animal Care Internships
At least two years of undergraduate collegiate work in wildlife management, conservation biology or a related scientific discipline are required. You must also have a valid driver’s license.
Spring: January-May (Deadline is October 1st)
Summer: May-August (Deadline is March 1st)
Fall: August-December (Deadline is June 1st)
A $300-per-month stipend (for expenses) and free on-site housing are provided. If required, transportation to and from training area will be provided.
The Whitfield Collins Carnivore Intern
The Whitfield Collins Carnivore Intern is given the day-to-day responsibility of several groups of animals. These include, but are not limited to: Mexican wolves, red wolves, maned wolves and coatimundi. The intern will be required to assist with hand-raising of neonates when necessary.
Training will include: preparing and feeding of diets; purchasing and/or ordering of diets and supplies; cleanup, maintenance and stocking of food preparation room; completing a monthly diet inventory report; general cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures and grounds; general monitoring of animal health and wellbeing; assisting with specific veterinary procedures (monthly deworming, fecal sample collecting, administering of medications, etc.); making behavioral observations as needed; participating in enrichment projects; daily record-keeping; completing expenditure forms; and completing an independent project.
Children’s Animal Center Internship
If you want an internship that gives you experience with a wide variety of animals, then the Children’s Animal Center Internship is for you! This intern is given the day-to-day responsibility of an assortment of animals located at the Children’s Animal Center (CAC). This includes a variety of goats, pot-bellied pigs, African spurred and Texas tortoises, an emu and psittacines including blue and gold macaws, an Eclectus parrot and bare-eyed cockatoos.
Some of your responsibilities include, but are not limited to: the daily cleaning and upkeep of the CAC; diet preparation; interacting with the public; helping vet staff with the CAC animals; working closely with volunteers; providing general maintenance and upkeep at exhibits and grounds; and general monitoring of animal health. You will also participate in enrichment and training with the various animals and complete an independent project.
The Rhino Internship
The Rhino Intern is given the day-to-day responsibility of caring for the black rhino herd.
Training will include: preparing and feeding of diets; cleaning and maintenance of the black rhino barn, yards and mechanical room; stocking of feed, hay, alfalfa and produce; completing monthly inventory reports, daily reports for feed consumption, health notes and training schedules; general monitoring of animals’ health and welfare; assisting with specific veterinary procedures (quarterly deworming, fecal sample collection, blood collection, ultrasound procedure, semen collection and administration of medications); making behavioral observations as needed; participating in enrichment projects; and completing an independent project.
Prairie Grouse Conservation Internship
At least two years of undergraduate collegiate work in wildlife management, conservation biology or a related scientific discipline are required. You must also have a valid driver’s license.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is a not-for-profit, AZA accredited organization, and the avian internship focus is on the breeding season of the highly endangered Attwater’s Prairie Chicken. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center offers its Avian Internship from April to August (dates are flexible). This breeding program is paramount in the reintroduction and recovery of this species of prairie grouse. Interns take part in the daily feeding, cleaning, diet preparation, visual observations, chick development, and daily assessments. Healthy chicks are then slotted for future breeding, or for the annual U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service release program.
Resumes are accepted year-round for this position. Applicants must be available from late March/early April through July/August. This internship is only available during the spring semester. Candidates should have an interest in and dedication to wildlife conservation. Must be graduated or out of school due to the internship coinciding with the breeding season of the Attwater’s prairie chicken. Interns will be required to work weekends, holidays and in inclement weather including 100º temperatures. Strong communication and organizational skills are necessary as well as attention to fine details. Being able to work independently but in a team atmosphere is also required. Similar to the other internships at Fossil Rim, on-site housing and transportation are provided.
