CVC SURE Program

2024 Now Open: 2024 Supporting Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE)

The Supporting Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) Program in the Cardiovascular Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has up to 4 paid summer research fellowships available during the summer (late May to early August) for undergraduates who belong to underrepresented groups in science and medicine including individuals who belong to racial/ethnic minorities, who are differently-abled of any race or ethnicity, who identify as LGBTQ+ of any race or ethnicity, and/or who come from a disadvantaged background of any race or ethnicity. To request disability accommodations for any part of the pathway journey, please email pathwayacc...@mcw.edu or call 414-955-4477.

This program is funded by the American Heart Association. We are seeking undergraduate students who are interested in STEMM (science, technology, biomedical engineering, and medicine) or biomedical careers for 10 weeks of hands-on experience in cardiovascular research within our laboratories, professional skill building, and seminars focused on STEMM and healthcare career preparation, how to apply to medical school and other allied health programs, and how to navigate graduate and medical school.

Application deadline:  February 1, 2024.

Participating SURE Institutions include Boston University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, Stanford University, University Hospitals of Cleveland, and Vanderbilt University.

 

 

SURE program benefits

 

Program Benefits:
• Participants are paired with a faculty researcher to contribute to a preexisting project (prior research experience is not required)
• Seminars on professional skill building, "career chats" on specific graduate school, medical school, and other allied health careers, and overcoming challenges and barriers for those from disadvantaged backgrounds
• Learn how to apply for graduate and medical school and enjoy networking opportunities through social events throughout the summer
• The program culminates with each participant presenting an oral presentation about their research project during a virtual research symposium

Participant Benefits:
• $6,000 compensation (paid in increments over the summer
• Free fully furnished housing accommodations to any participant from outside of the metro Milwaukee area 
• Free one-time roundtrip airfare to/from Milwaukee airport or ground transportation (if located more than 4 hours from Milwaukee)
• Option to attend the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions meeting in November with transportation, lodging, and registration fees covered free of charge.

Selected participants will gain valuable cardiovascular research experience, refine critical thinking skills, build upon academic and professional networks, and learn about careers in science and medicine.

Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old, have US work authorization and be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university. Must have one year of college credit and intend to pursue health-related or STEMM-related graduate or professional-level studies.

In addition to the application, you will need to arrange for two (2) recommenders to complete our online questionnaire. At least one (1) of the recommenders must be someone that you previous academic experience with (i.e. professor, mentor, tutor, advisor). If the recommender chooses to also submit a formal letter as part of the online questionnaire, the letter should be written on company/institutional/organizational letterhead.

Letters of recommendation can be submitted via email to summerp...@mcw.edu. If your school offers an electronic form of transcript submission, it can be sent to summerp...@mcw.edu, otherwise, hard copies of transcripts or letters of recommendation can be sent by mail to:
