I received this in my email this morning. If anyone is interested, we
could form a reunion committee and start making plans.
"My name is Mike Flint and I was a crewmember aboard the USS
Manitowoc, LST-1180.
The Manitowoc will be holding its third reunion in Evansville, Indiana
in August, 2012. Evansville is home to the LST-325, a floating (and
operating) memorial to all LSTs and those who operated them. We have
not set a specific date yet for the reunion but chose August as the
LST-325 would be available for tours during that month.
On behalf of our Reunion Planning Committee, we would like to invite
members who served on all other Newport Class LSTs to join us in
Evansville. You are free to plan and hold your own events, but take
advantage of group discounts.
Although we are still in the planning stages, we would also like to
propose the possibility of forming a Newport Class LST Association,
encompassing the LSTs that bore hull numbers from 1179 through 1198.
If you are interested in joining us individually or as a group, I
would urge you to contact your members and reply to me as soon as
possible so that we can determine the interest level and get an
approximate count. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
