Nagarajan,

The career potential for good Logisticians is always there however we
should also be aware that the world is on the brink of a recession -
if it has not already entered one and 2009 looks like a year where
there will be very little expansion in the job market.

I think perhaps the only region that has not be as adversely affected
is Dubai and the rest of the middle east but we do not know how long
this will change. My advice would be to get out there, get a job and
build up your portfolio of experience to coincide with your portfolio
of qualifications.

We may also want to look at differentiating oneself from our peers.
Let's face it there are numerous people out there with basic and
masters degrees. What separates us from them? If anyone needs pointers
in this regard, let me know.

Dear Nagarajan,

I read with interest that a lot of people out there have an MBA from some University. As ED rightfully said, what makes you different from a fellow MBA holder? To answer your question of how the market will be like for guys like you, like ED rightfully said, the Middle East region would be the region that will be least affected by the global reccession, but even if you do find a job there based on your qualifications, the rest of your career is up to you to make it through.

I have some advice for those seeking to change fields. While it is a welcomed sight to see people joining the Logistics & Supply Chain Industry, most of the time considered a "dirty" industry, but boasting of a Masters qualification (in something) will only get you a certain distance. I work for  the Distribution Centre supporting the Retail and F&B industry, and I assure you, I have personally seen a few Masters holder drop out of the race - in work. Some holds MBAs / MIBs / MAs (what have you), coming from the different backgrounds, only to leave after 4 months. Others join fresh from graduation, only to leave in less than 6 weeks.

The reason for their leaving is mainly due to 3 things:

  1. Unrealistic expectations - the fact they have a Masters Degree, they come in and expect a high pay, a high position but little responsibilities.
  2. Inexperience - they have never "tasted" real working life before and expect the ride to be smooth.
  3. Ego - holding a high qualification, does not make you the best. These guys expected everyone to cater to their every need.

On the other hand, I have seen Diploma holders, sometimes even below that in education, strife and are now Head of Departments, Supervisors, Executives (what have you). These "core group of guys" are more down to earth, realistic and even work 60-70 hrs per week (without any benefits), just to make things happen.

Regards,
Leo

Hi ED,

How come you are saying there will be a little expansion in job market in 2009?
And more journalists, news articles and etc, are saying there will be great recession in 2009.

Am currently taking a Diploma in Logistics, was hoping to enter one of the uni. in logistics industry.

Can anyone tell me:
Will the Supply Chain Management - a good industry to venture and for career ?
(I have a worry after i come across this website.. http://www.ilog.com/industries/logistics/)

Cos since there are IT systems to work on for SCM, then SCM specialists will be out of jobs in future??

Kel.

Dear Leonard,

Yes i second your view on this one. For my company, most of the people have either Diploma or even Degree (in surprise surprise, Science!), working for 3PL. Usually the diploma holders will upgrade while on the job to having a degree in SCM. However, there have been also cases whereby the Degree holder do stay for a couple of years, and then they are also interested in taking a deg in SCM just to have the knowledge and probably the know-how for this industry.

So, my personal advice to Nagarajan, please find out more from the various newsletters online and the job requirements for your interest in SCM. SCM has a lot of industry for you to be specialised in. And it also brings with it different job scopes too. So, please think carefully abt where you would like to be in the couple of years time, and will you be able to achieve this?

Again, i do need to stress that as a Masters holder, you may need to start from the bottom (else you may try the mgmt side see if they willing to take you in however, this maybe little chance since you do not have the experience).

Keep us updated, all rightey! :)

regards,
Sid.

Hi,

I can not possibly imagine systems replacing people. I have been involved in the logistics field for more than 15 years in Europe and Asia and despite the introduction of new systems, there is still an acute need for qualified SCM practitioners to implement, operate and make not only those sytems but also the operations work and improve.

So go on and get a good education in logistics and maybe most importantly acquire a robust hands-on experience in the logistics field as this is a one of the critical success factors in a logistics practitioner career.

Best of luck!

Best regards,
Nathalie

Dear Alice,

This is a very wide area / topic.

Could you please tell me what you would like to know and we will see
what we can do to help.

There is of course a lot written about FTA's and much on the internet.
I had a quick look at the wikipedia listing and it is quite 'ok' for
general information - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_trade_area

AFTA and NAFTA are the "main" FTA's in place but Singapore for example
has been signing many unilateral FTA's with different countries.

One issue that this has caused is the potential difficulty in ensuring
the exact terms and conditions of these FTA's is known clearly not
only by shippers and importers but also by respective Customs
authorities. We have an article coming out later this week on customs
rate mamagement and FTA's are talked about in this quite a fair bit.

I hope this information helps.
