Colleagues,

Are layoffs still happening or have they stopped as the news reports
say the global economy is slowing recovering?

Is the economy really recovering?

What do you think?

Hi -

Check the prediction markets. They are by far the best at forecasting and
answering these questions.

-j,

Yes, there are a number of places / sites that discuss this and we
certainly get ore than our fair share of press and government coverage
on the topic. I am more interested in what our forum members have to
say based on their own personal experiences as Logisticians.

Hi Ed,

I am currently working as Logistics Executive in a manufacturing firm that customised equipments for vessels to source for oil. I discover that a few offshore companies including those big-timers are now starting another round of retrenchment. Looks like not all sectors are recovering as the time frame of downturn is different. Different sectors are hit by the downturn by different timing. Just like my company, it will only feel the impact next year as we are now manufacturing the orders for last year and the orders for this year have not came in yet. If this carries on till end of this year, my company will be hit hardly. This is due to the fact that alot of vesels have started to be de-rigged which means that there will be alot of spare equipments lying around their stores.

Best Regards
Vincent

Everyone,
Please take a look at today's ADP employment report. Things don't look
too good in the U.S.

Hi,
yes, it doesn't look too good. Having said that, it does not come as a surprise, with the situation US is facing. US's companies have to and need to streamline themselves, in order to 'jam start' the US economy.  But was it too much too painful??

In Asia, retrenchment have stopped (unless I do miss out). Maybe small and medium company where few retrenchment were not significant. From one of my reply in another subject in early May. I am working in a Electronic firm, whose sales have pick up since February 2009, from December 2008 low. At end of June, our sales was 15% away from our high in July 2008. Is this good news that Asia economy is on its way to recovery? I hope so and I do think so. Infect, May 2009 was the most critical month, in determined which way the economy would go, as it seems that it is slipping, but we hung on and with the further strong push in June. I am sure we can make it.

At this moment, I think US needs and should tap on a strong Asia, to improve their position.
I also felt that US's companies should take dramatic steps in their internal costs cutting measures, so as to compete in this tight and shallow market place.

This is my own opinion. Do express if you felt otherwise.

Thank you.

Hi

It is nice to hear the asian market moving forward. but the indian market dont see any improvement. It is very tough times we have seen export and import come down by 50% and going further down. Any one knows after the budget announced how the market will fair.

It is tough times no one can cry as this looks very bad.

Hi Jyothi,
at the moment in Asia, China is the powerhouse, but India market is an opportunity. India is looking good with the stabilizing relation with Pakistan. As Pakistan increases their security against terrorist inside them, it will benefits India's economy and politics.

I am not sure of India's economic growth result, but the money market (stock market, bonds and funds) are still growing, and growing well. This may be sign of better economy situation in India future. No one would want to invest in a shaky economy.

Thank you.
William
