There is possibly some confusion on your part as to the meaning of Yield as used by this model.
In a uniaxial compression test, the stress versus strain response is initially elastic and then transitions to elastic-plastic (nonlinear). At that point the sample’s yield strength has been attained. Continue loading results in failure of the specimen.
This is similar to the behavior of metals: elastic, yield and failure.
