Just for interest sake to Disco 3 owners. Had a clunk in my steering wheel driving on uneven roads and after reading up on the problem decided to change my lower steering column. The bush that allows for the steering wheel to extend it in and out, as well as taking up the body movement to chassis was the culprit. I had a noticeable clunk in the sliding bush after removing it. Was a bit of a mission but once you figure it out actually not such a difficult job. My steering wheel is now clunk free. Everybody changes the suspension bushes first but it is also a good idea to change the lower steering shaft. Especially on the early disco 3 models as I believe the newer part is an improved version.
Look at the attachments for the part number and the LR manual on how to change it. For my V8 it was not necessary to remove the heat shields but it is not possible to get to the top bolt without removing half of the second battery tray. Al in all not a difficult job. Once again I am impressed with the thought that went into the Disco 3. Actually not too difficult a vehicle to work on. Hove done a few things on it already as I have no warranty or maintenance plan to worry about.
