Which gearbox oil?

Hi all,

 

Okay, I have decided to recycle all my old oils (they are all in open cans) and start afresh. So out goes the MTF94 that I have (it is more than 5 years old)

 

So what gearbox oil do I get for my Tdi. I can get the MTF94 at R143 per litre or Redline MTL at R180 per litre all in the quantities I need (3 litres). Redline MTF is a full Synthetic Manual gearbox oil that gives a much smoother gearshift and Alex vd H swears by it! The only disadvantage is price and the fact that if the old oil is dirty, I should flush the gearbox first.

Hi Dave,

 

I have always used Castrol VMX 80 in the main gearbox. VMX 80 has been discontinued and the recommended replacement is Castrol BOT 130. I have used the BOT 130 only once to date without any issues.

Hi Dirk,

 

For info what is the difference between Castrol BOT 402 and Castrol BOT 130? If you do a google both come up. I had Castrol BOT 402 on my list but dropped it when I found MTF94.

Hi Dave,

 

Castrol BOT 130 is SAE75W-90 and BOT 402 is SAE75W-85. It seems like there is only a small difference in the viscosity of the two oils.
