Hi,I returned on Friday after a week away at Ngwenya and my
Defenderperformed faultlessly.  I used it here on Saturday and then
gave it agood clean after all the mud we'd travelled through.  I was
on my wayyesterday to British 4x4 to get a reversing light lens for it
when theLBB and the dash light for low oil pressure came on while
stopped at arobot.  As soon as revs increased the alarm went off.  I
was onlyabout a km from home so I returned immediately and let the
Defenderstand for an hour or so.  When I then started it there was no
oilpressure light and I took it for a drive of a couple of km's and
thelight stayed off even when idling.  Later in the afternoon I
startedit again and the oil pressure light now remained on
permanently, evenas revs were increased.  This after there being no
problem when lastswitched off.This morning I bought a new oil pressure
sensor switch and installedit as I was sure (hoping) this would be the
problem, but there is nochange - the oil pressure light remains on
permanently.  Any ideaswhat next to check? If I remove the lead from
the sensor then no lightcomes on so it is not an electrical fault.

Hi Peter,

Sorry to hear that you haven't come right. Sounds like your oil pump is
maybe not pumping properly. Question, have you smacked your sump recently?
The sieve on the oil pickup sits very close to the bottom of the sump so if
you dent your sump from underneath you can actually starve the pump of oil.
Saw that at Independent 4x4 recently. Or maybe the sieve is blocked or the
oil pickup has come loose.

Have you tried cranking the engine with your finger over the hole where the
switch goes to see if there is oil pressure? If need be give me a shout and
I will come and help!

Dave, I'll remove the switch and do a crank (with the wire removed
from the starter solenoid and see what happens.

Hi Peter
See if you can't buy a cheap pressure gauge, maybe a gauge from a pool
filter and fit it into the sensor hole for a pressure test. cheers

Hi Peter.

If you try what Dave mentions and there is still no pressure, it could be either the oil pump or even just the spring.
Both are not great to get to (need to remove the sump and a few other bits)
There is a cheat for tentioing the spring and that's to put a coin in the sleeve. But if you are that far in removing bits to fix the spring, you might as well just put a new one in.

UPDATE:
Dave Morgan came around to lend an extra pair of hands and I removed
the oil pressure sensor switch and cranked the motor to see if there
was any pressure or oil coming out the hole - nothing, no pressure or
oil at the hole.  So it looks like the sump will have to be dropped.
Will check the oil filter first in case there is anything obviously
wrong with it.

Hi Peter,

Another prognosis is that the relief valve is stuck open! If the oil pickup
is clean etc., then that has to the next most likely cause. Take the cap off
and see if there is gunge in there but beware the cap that holds the relief
valve in place is a bastard to get undone. I needed a hammer and chisel to
get mine undone but be careful as it sits in the aluminium timing housing so
you need to be gentle. Also if the piston is stuck I do not know how you
would get it out from underneath the vehicle?

When you take the sump off just have a look at what might be lying in the
bottom as this will tell you a story. I found pieces of a valve cap which
had been well and truely chewed up on it's way to the sump!!
