No new Defender, says Land Rover boss

IOL mot pic may21 Land Rover DC100 Concept

.

It seems unlikely now that the Land Rover DC100 will reach productiion in anything like its current form.

Land Rover has apparently hit a speed bump with its plans to replace the venerable Defender with a similarly basic, ultra-tough workhorse beetle-crusher - because parent company Tata can no longer afford to come to the party after both its super-cheap Nano and Aria SUV flopped in the marketplace.

And that would also scupper plans for a new Jaguar Land Rover engine plant in India as well as a bakkie-based Tata SUV with a ladder chassis that would carry the Defender badge forward when fitted with Land Rover running gear.

NEXT DEFENDER LIKELY TO BE A STRIPPED-OUT DISCOVERY

Autocar quoted Land Rover brand director John Edwards as saying the new Defender would not be ready for production by 2015, even though the current defender will have to be phased out in that year because it can't be made to comply with future legislation.

Apparently the new Defender will now be based on the same all-aluminium PLA platform as the next-generation Discovery, it will be a lot less basic (and lot more expensive) than the current Defender and will be built in Solihull's aluminium body shop.

Which will leave the rough-'n-tough end of the segment (as well as the lucrative military market) to the Mercedes GL, Jeep Wrangler and the Japanese triumvirate of Toyota, Nissan and Isuzu.

Pity, I think the DC100 would have been an amazing vehicle, and its quite pretty. They should have replaced the 90 with the DC 100, and kept the long wheelbase versions of the current defender, but fit them with the TDV6 motors and auto boxes. that would be awesome.

Hi there folks

A friend had to replace the oil cooler on his 90. What will be the best oil to put in the gearbox?

Regards

Hannes

Do not know what the best is, Hannes, but we run Texaco MTF94 in my wife's one.

The R380 in there is basically the same as others (TDi input shaft, slightly changed ratios I think.)

In other R380s I have run Castrol Dynadrive and Castrol VMX as well.

Old spec said ATF, but I believe everyone has moved away from that, although at the gearbox talk a few weeks ago, a synthetic  ATF/EP90 GL4 mix was mentioned.

Regards

Hi there

Where can one get MTF94 around Pretoria these days, as I need to refill my stocks.  Apparently this oil has been developed for the R380 gearbox.  Have been using it for quite a while without any problems.
