The original spec for the R380 was ATF. LR then changed the spec to Caltex MTF94.
It was only LR and one Honda vehicle that used MTF94, hence it was always difficult to source. That, plus Caltex's policy of delivering MTF in a 210 liter drum, then invoiced the receiver as soon as the drum was opened.
So, the supplier would pay for the drum (MTF was/is expensive), then sell a liter or three every now and then. Therefore suppliers were reluctant to stock MTF.
It only became available in smaller containers much later.
So, bottom line: ATF is old spec, MTF superceded that

I am also struggling with this question. There was a main steam stating that it is only ATF for the main box. Going through Rave I found that it gave a gearbox oil, (OLD Specs) and mentioned that to top up use ATF.
 
Two years ago they fillied my gearbox with ATF only, and it is not the same. I can concur that this is the answer.

I had great success with the following:
 
- Gearbox: Castrol Syntrans 75W90
- diffs and transfer case: Castrol Syntrax 75W140
 
Almost resolved the 3rd to 4th synchromesh problem on the LT85 gearbox.
Also significantly dropped the heat generated by the drivetrain.

Additional info out of RAVE. This is for R380 Disco II V8.

Rave spec, TD5 99 onwards.

300TDi R380 gearbox.

 

Noting some differences though…..

MTF94 was a very obscure mix.
The other one was BOT402.

BOT402 was discontinued and lives on as Castrol Syntrans.

Jakes. 100%.

 

Today my main concerns are to make sure I stay close to the manufacturers requirement with what is on the market.

 

Some years ago their was a big drive to replace all the oils with this new wonder drug called Habot synthetics. It did what they said it would, but they did not mention that my “92 Camel will not like it due to the lack of ZDDP. Basically the cam was consumed by the valve train due to this.

Recently, with myself and 2x friend, a “replacement oil” in his D3 gearbox meant that the gearbox was so warn, prematurely that I had to redo. Expensive!

Currently my R380, D2 box hanging off a 4.6L P38 are a bit noisy for the oil that was subscribed some time ago was not ideal.

 

Yes, wrote many moons ago, but still the guideline. As the inner components are still the same. However, oils have improved, in the proses some changes has occurred that can be detrimental…
