Good Evening

I need to replace the vacuum pump on my Defender 300TDi as it is leaking oil and the brakes only work if I pump it a couple of times before braking.

Can anyone tell me what vacuum pump to buy at a reasonable price and where as my 2 previous ones were a WABCO and an Allmakes and both only lasted 20 000 km each.

Thanks

Mark,
I've been through similar experiences with mine and currently have an
Allmakes that I got from British 4x4. I discovered that my actual
brake booster had two hairline cracks in the area where the two bolts
holding the master cylinder are fixed to it. Apparently this is a
common problem and this places extra load on the vacuum pump. I
haven't done too many kilos since replacing the booster and vacuum
pump so can't comment on the longevity of the pump but my brakes are
working fine.

Hi Mark

I replaced the Britpart one about a year and a half ago with the Allmakes one. Got a good price from Landy Parts for Africa in Pine Town. Britpart one lasted about a year and before that I had the Wabco, which also did not last long.

Hope this helps.

Greetings Mark,

I have a 1996 Disco and had to replace the 300 Tdi engine after the coolant header tank split and the engine seized as a result. Cliff Barker installed a 2.8 power stroke engine from Brasil. The best move I ever made!! Prior to the engine change I had replaced the Wabco vacuum pump twice.
The Wabco pump is one of the the things that the power stroke engine got rid of. The vacuum pump of the power stroke engine comes fitted to the rear of the alternator.
However after about 80 000kms I noticed a small oil leak on the alternator shaft driving the vacuum pump. Despite being a Bosch alternator, a replacement seal is hard to come by..........Bosch in Brasil is different from Bosch in RSA.
So I re-installed the original alternator from the seized engine (100amps as opposed to 85) which does not have a vacuum pump attached, and I fitted an electric vacuum pump.
Now the vacuum pump does not run continuously but only on demand....when more vacuum is required.
I've done about 15000km with the electric pump and am still very happy.
See Photo attached.

I bought the pump from http://www.winbrake.com/prod_iruna.html

Blessings
Ed

Good idea thanks Ed. Do you recall the cost of the pump?

Ciao

Found the problem. Fuel return rubber pipes between the injectors were perrished. Replaced with 3.5 mm pipe and back to easy starting. Only problem is I broke the tap on the rear wheel arch filter. Any ideas as to where I can get a replacement. Regards Errol

Errol,
Replacement screws are available from agents or other part suppliers I believe.  I have a whole unit as a spare that I got at a stock clearance.  Unfortunately the plastic screw is a weak point and breakages are common.
I've always just removed the whole bowl to clean, but its been a while since I did it.

Good to hear you sorted the starting out.  I changed my injector return pipes when I was at Kenton a year or so back.

Cheers
