Hi All
I noticed some goo in the expansion tank of my '97 300Tdi . Could it be oil?
There is no unusual smoke and the engine pulls as it should. Cooling temperature on the Madman is normal.
The vehicle has done very low mileage in recent years, as it was in an accident some 3 years ago - it fell on it's one side and laid like that for a few hours before it was uprighted and taken away. After that the body was beautifully repaired by Pon Steyn. They also pressure tested the engine and reported all was well. As far as I know they did not flush the cooling system though.
We are on the Transkei coast now.
I will flush the cooling system tomorrow, but any additional pointers and advice will be appreciated.
Thanks a lot
Viv

hi - a brown goo would normally indicate oil in the coolant - head gasket or crack in the head.  I don't recall the 300tdi being prone to these problems, only overheating when a pipe on the back of the motor popped off without warning. Did the car overheat?  Sometimes you can smell the gasses in the coolant?

Thanks for your reply Henri

This afternoon I drained the contents of the expansion tank into a plastic bottle. The dark brown goo floating on top of the coolant very much looks and feels like oil.

As I described below, about 3 years ago the car was involved in an accident and landed on it's one side, it laid that that for a few hours. So, would it be possible for engine oil to have worked itself into the coolant during that period? I suppose not, and If the accident is not the cause, do I then have to assume that a cracked head or head gasket is the only other viable explanation? The car never overheated and there are no other symptoms - it pulls well, there is no abnormal smoke and the madman shows coolant temperature as normal. It is a sad story, it only has 159 000km’s on the clock.
