Anyone knows where Defender's immobiliser control unit is located ? It
is a 2000 year model.

And how to determine if it is faulty ?

No power going to starter when key is turned and engine does not fire
up during push start.

Alarm avtivation/de-activation with remote working 100%

Deon have you checked your main relays under the driver's seat? Normally
even with immobiliser active, the engine cranks but won't start, but if the
main relay is loose, or faulty, then no power goes to the starter.

Thanks Taun

Relay ok - it has now been ascertained that the alarm control box does
not send a de-activated signal to the ECU. When engine is cranked with
power directly to starter, engine runs for 2 seconds and then cuts
out. Also fuse in main fuse compartment marked "alarm system" keeps on
blowing. So it seems that the control box (little green box behind
speedo) needs to be replaced or by-passed(?).

Also thanks to Jakob for his tips and advice yesterday !

Had green box replaced (2nd hand from a Disco2 TD5)for R1500 - new
from LR R3000. Turns out that this is not such "a little" green box
and manages the whole alarm system which, according to Land Rover "is
impossible to steal vehicle without remote unit" - yeah right ! My old
green box shows no signs of rust, mold or corrosion which apparently
causes it to stop working, but yet it was diagnosed as "US".

What bothers me now is what to do if this happens in the bush -
apparently the TDI unit can simply be by-passed, but not on the TD5.
But ............. there is a blanking plug that can be fitted to the
unit that will enable the engine to run without the immobilizer and is
a genuine LR part, but obtaining such a plug is verrrryyyy difficult.
Any advice ?

On the older vehicles it basically pulls one wire to earth for the ECU, and also provides an enabling signal to the spider.(and also controls central locking)
Thus by bypassing the spider and earthing the wire on the ECU, your vehicle will run.
On the vehicles of that time that did not have immobilsers (i.e no spider and no anti theft (green) box, there was simply a bypass plug in place of the green box. On them you can use the plug from a broken box to make your own bypass plug.

For the TD5, it would be best to work through the ETM (us the USA version, as they publish the security circuits) to see how it can be bypassed.

Deon,

Most likely cause is a "dry joint" - a soldering joint/connection on the PC
board that vibrated loose. Take it to an electronic technician & ask him o
"re-solder" all joints on the PC board & then leave it in your car as a
spare.

That is what happened to my DiscoI's alarm ECU
