Method 1: replace the fuel map on the engine's ECU (computer box) with
another map
- No wiring changes required
- no control of the map that is loaded (ie the map is what it is, you
can not change areas of the map for more or less fuel
- there are Land Rover fuel maps and 3rd party fuel maps. LR fuel maps
may not yield the most power but should offer the best ito long term
confidence. The best of these LR fuel maps is called "Discovery 2 TD5
Auto European spec" - or somesuch. 3rd party fuel maps may be awesome
ito short term performance but you're sticking your neck (or rather your
TD5's neck) WAY OUT.
Method 2: install a "piggy back chip"
- typically "engineers" strip and cut and join your landies wires and
who knows what issues that will bring some time down the road
- tuning is done in real time - make a change and see immediately what
happens on the dyno
- tuning is often done by techies who don't fully understand what they
do ( I saw this with mine own eyes) eg they may know that you get more
power with more fuel (in case of diesel) but you may also get more power
simply by changing the timing at which the diesel is injected. I saw
with my own eyes how timing mapping was disregarded by the operator;
- this method IF CORRECTLY APPLIED (and how would you know????) may
yield the most optimal (note I did not say "the best") result ito power
and economy
Choose wisely....

Can you have more than one map simultaneously, so that you can choose the one most appropriate for the conditions, eg, one for on-road and another for offroad?

What difference would you like to have between the on-road and off-road
maps Mike?
What makes you believe it is not possible to have both on one map? This
is a serious question on my part as after all these years of playing
with Megasquirt, I still don't understand the need for map switching.
To me "off-roading" is simply the 'low rpm / light load - heavly load'
area of the map whereas "on-road" is the 'mid rpm / higher load areas'
of the map. You have to get through the off-road area to get to the
on-road area. Maybe there is something I simply do not see, so my
question is sincere.
I think we are all exploring this, so maybe it is more my lack of understanding of how the mapping works. I would think you need high torque at low revs for off road use, with optimal fuel consumption and smooth running not being a factor, where as for normal road use fuel efficiency and smooth running through the rev band is more important. I was not aware that you can have both of these settings in one map.
Dual maps are more commonly used in heavily modified cars running
turbo's. For max power a car must run richer, so when a guy races, he
switch to the rich "power" map, and for normal driveng he uses the
economic leaner "normal" map.
I am sure that is a Landy is mapped optimally, it will be as happy
off-riad, than its on the open road
:-)
On road use of the same car will require less use of full throttle area
of the map but when it is used the driver STILL requires healthy AFRs
and max power.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there is no justification for dual
maps. Its just that I honestly can not see the need for it and wonder
if this is not just another case of marketing BS or perhaps a left over
of older technology. I am both keen and open to understand the need if
someone could really show me the merits.

Clutch depressed + TPS @ wide open = Launch control / Flat shift active.
There are youtube videos that shows how it works on Megasquirt.
Then you can take on the BMW M3s!!!!

Pretoria - Tzaneen: 6.6km/L
Pietersburg - Pta: 6.4km/L
- Distance measured with GPS, fuel = pump readings
- 245/75/16 oversize tyres (this reduces revs per kilometer - just a
little - and hence fuel consumption)
- Landytech adjusted mixtures to the leanest setting possible with their
T4 computer (which is still "rich" compared to my D1 4.6)
- Used speed control (120km/h as per GPS) whenever possible and AC on.
- no trailer, no roofrack.

Die Pta-Tza syfer is eintlik Pta-Tza-Ptbg... (470km / 71L)
Ek het met my D1 4.6 geleer dat mens soveel petrol spaar met die "af"
dat dit opmaak vir die "op" sodit maar "dieselfde" is asof mens gelyk
pad gery het.

So on Saturday, I bought my 4th Land Rover, a 2000 Disco 2 GS Auto V8
:-). The 4.6 V8 in my Rangie will find its way to the Disco soon.
A couple of questions to the Disco 2 owners;
1. Any known issues I have to check out, or watch out for?
2. The backlighting in the clock and in the drivers side temp control on
the climate control don't work, how do I get to the globes to replace
them?
3. Will the diff-lock linkages from a Disco 1 fit the Disco 2?
Groetnis
Pieter
1st Check that the diff lock itself is present. I have been on a Away
weekend with a guy in a 2000 model and the diff lock itself was absent
(without leave of course).
Regarding the linkages I am not sure whether the Series 1 is the same, but
what about the system from Willem, although I am still on hold since 30th
April for it to be put together?
Regards
Attie

Yup, die diff-lock is daar. Willem se kabel stelsel is beslis 'n
oorweging, ek wil maar net sien of daar 'n maklike manier is om die OEM
links te gebruik wat op die low/high range hefboom gekoppel is.

Unless I was a bit impatient (me? No, come on...), I could not figure
out how to separate the engine from the torque converter as I could not
find the section in the manual that describes that. After making a few
phone calls, (which did not help) I had another good look and found a
large rubber plug on the RH side of the sump which gave access to the 4
bolts that fasten the flex plate onto the torque convertor through holes
in the flywheel.

Jys reg, Eric het dit nou net bevestig. Disco 1 se links pas op die Disco 2 manual, maar die Disco 2 auto is uniek.

One of those rubber plugs (there is one on either side) was missing on my
Disco and since it doesn't future anywhere on LR's part list, it took them
almost 5 months to get a replacement from the UK. At that stage I know
exactly what the hole's where for.
Some say it shouldn't be covered, most doesn't have any idea what it was al
about and an "chief" engineer explained to the dealer who eventually
succeeded in getting the replacement plug.

Does anyone know what is the idea of the funny wheel nuts Land Rover is using on the mag wheels?
Seems like a loose metal part, covering the real wheel nut.
Dunno, looked at this myself. But it works well – doesn’t dent, corrode and stays shiny. And because it it long the spanner doesn’t slip off. And looks cool...:-)
