Hi Guys,

My 2004 TD5 Defender has no charge coming off the alternator. When a fully charged battery is put in, and you turn on the ignition, the charge light comes on, along with all the other lights (MIL, Glowplugs, oil pressure etc), and goes off once the engine has started, but the battery is not getting any charge, juste slowly drops down to around 11, and if you turn the lights on, the car cuts out. What could be the matter. Before I have the Alternator replaced for no reason, I would like to know what else to check. there must be a connection issue or something.

Regards,
Taun

Taun - just a wild guess - check the "trigger" wire to the alternator - little thin wire that also powers the charge light. Mine once had a bad connection and lead to the battery not being charged and running down. Luckily a friend showed me that the wire were broken - problem was sorted.
groetnis
Gys

Taun, having a "charge light" switching off doesn't always mean everything is working.
Grab your multimeter & measure the voltage coming out of the thick wires off the back of the alternator.
If there is not 13.8 to 14.2V, alt is faulty. If Voltage is present, could be wiring fault (to Battery) or charge
fuse in engine-fuse-box.

Hope it helps
